Thinking that the awliyah brings us close to Allah is shirk asghar or akbar? Question:
I would like to ask what is the situation of a person who is upon Sufism and believes that an Awliyah brings him near to Allah however he doesn't direct his dua or worship directly to this dead person or believes that dead answers the dua but he calls upon Allah. At the same time he thinks that this love he has for that person will cause Allah's mercy forgiveness and love for him so in some times of difficulty goes to his grave calls upon only Allah thinking that comes closer to Him because of the dead. This person prays keeps fasting and the pillars of faith. Is that minor or major shirk because I have found disagreements between the students of knowledge. May Allah reward you with goodness.

Shaikh Adel As-Sayyed:
This is Shirk Asghar (Lesser Shirk) and of course this is forbidden. Yes, we love the awliya of Allah- the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his companions, his wives- and this is worship which makes us close to Allah but only within the boundaries Allah has placed upon this worship.

_Zaynab El-Kateb's note:
We are never to go to their graves because there is a prohibition to pray near the graves. The people of Nuh used to supplicate to Allah near the graves of the pious people (Ya'ooth, Yagooth, Nasra) then step by step the Shaytaan made them fall into shirk. Soon after they stopped supplicating to Allah and started supplicating to the people of the graves. So this is a dangerous affair, we must keep away from the paths of shirk so keep away from supplicating/praying near graves.
Regarding the differences in opinions of the scholars: There is no difference of opinions because the Scholars say lesser Shirk is the act which leads to greater shirk. They all agree that supplicating near a grave is strictly prohibited.

Allaah has made patience like a horse that never gets tired, an army that can never be defeated and a strong fortress that can never be breached. Patience and victory are twin brothers, for victory comes with patience, relief comes with distress and ease comes with hardship. Patience is of more help to the one who has it than men, as it helps without any need for equipment or numbers and its relationship to victory is like that of the head to the body.

In the Qur’aan, Allaah has guaranteed those who are patient that He will give them reward without measure.

He tells them that He is with them by guiding and supporting them and granting them a clear victory. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Surely, Allaah is with those who are As‑Saabiroon (the patient)”

[al-Anfaal 8:46]
Narrated Uqba bin Amr:

The Prophet (ﷺ) once came out and offered the funeral prayer for the martyrs of Uhud, and proceeded to the pulpit and said,

"I shall be your predecessor and a witness on you, and I am really looking at my sacred Fount now, and no doubt, I have been given the keys of the treasures of the world. By Allah, I am not afraid that you will worship others along with Allah, but I am afraid that you will envy and fight one another for worldly fortunes."

Praise Allāh In Ease And Distress

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : اعلم أن خير عباد الله تبارك وتعالى يوم القيامة الحمادون.

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Know that the best slaves of Allāh Tabārak Wa Ta'ālā on the Day of Resurrection will be al-Ḥammādūn (those who praise Allāh in every condition).”

● [أخرجه أحمد ٤\٤٣٤ وإسناده صحيح]

May Allāh Make Us From al-Ḥammādūn

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : إن أفضل عباد الله يوم القيامة الحمادون.

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Indeed the best of servants of Allāh on the Day of Resurrection will be the Ḥammādūn (those who praise Allāh during ease and as well as during hardship).”

Benefit: Only the Truth Is Respected

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān (حفظه الله) said: “Those who say, ‘Respect all of the different views and opinions’ are wrong. Only the truth is respected.”

Truthful dreams/Visions

“True dreams are one of the forty-six parts of Prophethood.” (al-Bukhaari, 6472; Muslim, 4201)

The truthfulness of the dream is related to the sincerity of the dreamer. Those who have the most truthful dreams are those who are the most truthful in speech. (Muslim, 4200)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“That will be because the Prophethood and its effects will be so far away in time, so the believers will be given some compensation in the form of dreams which will bring them some good news or will help them to be patient and steadfast in their faith.” (al-Bukhaari, 6499; Muslim, 4200)
Ibnu Qayyim al-Jawziyyah [d. 751 هـ] - رحمه الله - said:

There are ten issues that are useless:

1. Knowledge that is not acted on

2. The action (i.e. deed) that is not done sincerely nor is based on following the examples of the righteous

3. Money that is kept and not used as the one who owns it does not enjoy it during this life nor does he gain any reward for it in the Hereafter

4. The empty heart that does not love Allāh nor long for Him, not seeking to be close to Him

5. The body that does not obey Allāh or serve Him

6. Loving Allāh without following His commandments or seeking His pleasure

7. Time that is not spent in expiating sins or capturing and seizing opportunities to do good deeds

8. A mind that thinks about what is useless

9. Serving those who will not bring you closer to Allāh nor benefit you in your life

10. Fearing whoever is under the authority of Allāh and is in His Hand

HEART SHOULD TREMBLE WITH THIS...

It is reported that Abūl-ʿĀliyah said:

"There will come upon the people a time when their hearts will be derelict of the Qurān; they will find neither sweetness nor pleasure by it.
If they fall short of doing what they have been commanded to do, they will say: Allāh is most forgiving, merciful (He will forgive us), and if they do what they have been forbidden from doing, they will say: we will be forgiven, we haven’t committed any shirk with Allāh.
Their affairs will all be based on [false] hope, having no truth and sincerity with it. They will wear the skins of lambs over hearts of wolves.
The best of them in his religion will be someone who compromises."

🔹Du'a (Invocation) Is Worship and is Of Two Types: Du'a of Need and Du'a of Worship

Du'a Is Of Two Types: That Of Need and That of worship

The Scholars explain that du'a is of two types:

▫️The first is an explicit request made such as "O Allaah, forgive me!", and "O Allaah provide for me!" and "O Allaah, show mercy to me!" and "O Allaah guide me!" and "O Allaah, grant me a righteous spouse", and "O Allaah grant me success!" and so on. All of these are specific requests, for specific needs and this is called (دعاء المسألة), "The invocation of need". This type of du'a is accompanied with other forms of worship, particularly those of the heart, such as love, hope, aspiration, reliance, awe and the likes.

▫️As the for second, (دعاء العبـادة), "the invocation of worship", then this covers every act of worship in the sense that when you perform any act of worship, whether it is inward, outward, verbal or non-verbal, then even if you are not expressing it explicitly with your tongue, you are nevertheless, by way of the performance of that action, asking from Allaah. For example, by giving charity, which is worship, you are asking, by way of your action, even if you do not verbally express it, for reward, mercy and forgiveness and the likes. And the same applies to all other actions of worship. Thus, this is called "the invocation of worship", in the sense that you are invoking Allaah (silently) through the actions you are performing.

Now both of these two types of worship are intended by the verses that are mentioned above, and when you refer back to the classical commentaries of the Qur'an you find that they use du'a, interchangeably with ibaadah, because that is exactly how it has been used in the Qur'an.

Prohibition of Invoking Others Besides Allaah

From the above, everything that occurs in the Qur'an of the command to invoke Allah and Him alone, praising of those who invoke only Him alone, the prohibition of invoking others, and the absence of any benefit of invoking others besides Allaah, as occurs frequently in the Qur'an, then this applies to both forms of invocation mentioned above.

The issue of invocation is also connected to other forms of worship such as isti'aanah (seeking aid), isti'aadah (seeking refuge) and istighaathah (seeking rescue), and these will be dealt with separately in other articles.

Accusing others of ill-intentions🍃

Makhool - one of our great pious predecessors said, "I once saw a man crying in his prayer, so I accused him of showing off, and (as a punishment from Allaah for my wrong-doing) I was deprived of crying in my prayers for an entire year!"

Ibnul-Qayyim added, "If one finds it difficult to determine his OWN intentions whether they are sincere or not, how does he judge the intentions of others???”**Accusing others of ill-intentions**

اللهم بارك عليه
(Allaahumma baarik alayh – O Allaah send your blessings upon him)

for pushing away this malicious condition by making a supplication, which is an act of charity for the one who has been afflicted with the evil-eye. The cure of evil is by doing its opposite.”
