The automotive industry is moving towards electrification, and there's a big demand for more efficient, compact, and reliable power electronics. SiC power devices show great promise due to their superior characteristics like high power density, low switching losses, and the ability to operate at high temperatures.
As part of this research, you'd get to:
· Explore new device designs to make SiC power devices even better suited for automotive and traction systems.
· Work with cutting-edge fabrication and testing techniques to see how these devices perform electrically, thermally, and in terms of reliability.
· Collaborate with industry partners to evaluate SiC devices, making sure they're performing at their best in terms of efficiency and cost.
· Consider environmental factors like electromagnetic interference and ruggedness to ensure these devices are safe and robust under operating conditions.
· Use computer models to predict how these devices will behave in different situations, and tweak their designs accordingly.
Eligibility
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in Electrical Engineering or Physical Sciences or equivalent from an overseas institution. The candidate will be expected to have a background / keen interest in modelling and experimental investigation of solid-state devices.
Benefits

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven individual with a recent MASc/MSc degree to undertake doctoral studies on advancing energy storage technologies under the joint supervision of Profs. Marianna Kontopoulou and Dominik Barz, Department of Chemical Engineering, Queen’s University. The Department of Chemical Engineering offers a rich and diverse multi-cultural environment and inclusive workplace for all. This work is funded through the prestigious Bruce Mitchell Research Program which provides the successful candidate with a minimum of $35,000 per year for a 4-year term.
Expected Qualifications:
1. Educational Background: A recent Masters degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science or a related field with a specialization in energy storage materials. The candidate should possess a strong academic foundation, demonstrated by an outstanding academic record in electrochemistry, materials characterization and/or nanomaterials.
2. Research Experience: Prior experience in energy storage materials, particularly in non-aqueous environments, is preferred. Familiarity with lithium and sulfur-based electrode materials would be advantageous. Relevant journal publications in high quality journals are an asset.
3. Technical Skills: Familiarity with electrochemical and material characterization techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, XPS, XRD, and SEM is desired. Hands-on experience with various synthesis and fabrication methods for electrodes and batteries and experience in working with a glove box would be an asset.
4. Other Skills: Independent, self-motivated work style and outside of the box thinking. Strong communication abilities to convey complex scientific concepts effectively through presentations and written reports.

Mutiple RA positions are available at the Cyber-Physical Power and Energy Systems (CPPES) lab in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Missouri (Columbia). The students are expected to study on one or more of the following areas/tracks:
Track 1: Cybersecurity: Malware Security, Zero-Trust Security, Blockchain, Security Assessment (including Ethical Hacking);
