Bruce Mitchell Doctoral Scholarship - Research and Development on Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven individual with a recent MASc/MSc degree to undertake doctoral studies on advancing energy storage technologies under the joint supervision of Profs. Marianna Kontopoulou and Dominik Barz, Department of Chemical Engineering, Queen’s University. The Department of Chemical Engineering offers a rich and diverse multi-cultural environment and inclusive workplace for all. This work is funded through the prestigious Bruce Mitchell Research Program which provides the successful candidate with a minimum of $35,000 per year for a 4-year term.
 
Expected Qualifications:
1.    Educational Background: A recent Masters degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science or a related field with a specialization in energy storage materials. The candidate should possess a strong academic foundation, demonstrated by an outstanding academic record in electrochemistry, materials characterization and/or nanomaterials.
2.    Research Experience: Prior experience in energy storage materials, particularly in non-aqueous environments, is preferred. Familiarity with lithium and sulfur-based electrode materials would be advantageous. Relevant journal publications in high quality journals are an asset.
3.    Technical Skills: Familiarity with electrochemical and material characterization techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, XPS, XRD, and SEM is desired. Hands-on experience with various synthesis and fabrication methods for electrodes and batteries and experience in working with a glove box would be an asset.
4.    Other Skills: Independent, self-motivated work style and outside of the box thinking. Strong communication abilities to convey complex scientific concepts effectively through presentations and written reports.

Solace Power and the University of New Brunswick (UNB) are teaming up to investigate electromagnetic field emissions from high-frequency wireless charging systems to develop mitigation strategies that will safeguard the public and prevent interference with other electronic devices. We are recruiting a graduate student researcher who will drive this work with support from both organizations. Research findings will advance Canadian and international standards for wireless charging systems and provide companies like Solace Power a clear path toward commercialization.

Position Details
A fully funded doctoral (PhD) position in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) - Fredericton campus. Primary supervisor: Chris Rouse, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Three (3) Mitacs Accelerate internships with Solace Power. Co-supervisor: Robert Cove, Ph.D.

Access to the resources and equipment of UNB’s Radiating Systems Research Laboratory and Solace Power’s Engineering Laboratory:
• Electromagnetic simulation software (CST Studio Suite, among others)
• RF test and measurement equipment (signal generators, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, high-speed oscilloscopes, etc.)
• Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) pre-compliance assessment tools (anechoic chambers, field probes, calibrated antennas, and a test receiver)

Opportunities to present at top wireless power conferences and publish in high-impact IEEE journals.

Essential Criteria:
Prospective doctoral candidate in electrical engineering or a related field.

Passionate about electromagnetics and radiofrequency (RF) engineering: analysis, simulation, and measurements.

Committed to the promotion of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Available to start in September 2024 (or as soon as possible).

Other (Nonessential) Criteria:
