A Fully-funded PhD Studentship in hydrogen storage by bio-based molecules
The future of the energy sector depends on the development of new, economic, and non-polluting energy sources. Hydrogen offers an excellent opportunity to decarbonise all energy sectors, from transport to industry and therefore large quantities and large-scale continuation are required. Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology offers an innovative solution for large-scale hydrogen storage and distribution.
The aim of this research project is to synthesise a novel catalyst for the dehydrogenation of bio-based compounds to demonstrate the practical advantage of using organic compounds for hydrogen storage.
The proposed project will have a high impact on both industry and academia, in terms of research impact and new technology based on process intensification. Using a membrane reactor (MR) provides an essential role for process intensification: (i) developing a compact unit, improving their productivity; (ii) least quantity of energy to supply the system; (iii) low environmental impact. Furthermore, this project fits well with different research themes, e.g. “Manufacturing the Future”, “Energy” and “Innovative Engineering”.
The project mainly aligns with research related to energy, environment, and process intensification, and therefore will allow access to both national and international funding opportunities, with consequences in terms of high-impact scientific publications, patent invention, and potential for future funding prospects.
Qualifications and experience
Candidates should have a relevant first-class degree or an equivalent overseas degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related disciplines.
Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to prepare presentations, reports, and journal papers to the highest levels of quality.
Good interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team consisting of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
Non-UK students are welcome to apply. Overseas applicants may be asked to provide a recognised English language qualification, depending upon their nationality and the institutions they have studied previously. We normally require an IELTS (Academic) Test with an overall score of at least 6.5, and a minimum of 6.0 in each element of the test.

I will be opening and building my Nature-Inspired Engineering Research Lab (NIERL) to continue my work on developing and employing computational techniques and multi-physics simulations to investigate natural fluid-structure interactive mechanisms and their utilization for better engineering systems. At the beginning of this new chapter of my life, I pay my sincere thanks to my PhD advisors, Professor Imran Akhtar (National University of Sciences and Technology (Pakistan) and Professor Haibo Dong (University of Virginia, USA) and my postdoc advisors Professors Moubin Liu (Peking University, China) and Professor Arman Hemmati (University of Alberta, Canada) for their generous and kind support and guidance throughout my career so far. I am also grateful to all my colleagues and collaborators for their encouragement and cooperation.
