🇺🇸 MS Position in Freshwater Ecosystem Ecology, University of Delaware

    A 2-year MS graduate position is available in the Ecosystem Ecology Group of the Stroud Water Research Center. This position will focus on investigating the origin and transport of river algae in the main stem and tributaries of the Delaware River Basin (DRB). The student will be based and advised by Dr. Peipoch at the Stroud Center located in Avondale, PA, and will be enrolled in the Water Science & Policy at the University of Delaware located 20 min from the Stroud Center. The student will be part of an NSF-funded project focused on understanding regional and continental-level patterns in river algal sources, productivity, and transport dynamics by linking high-frequency data from a network of in-situ chlorophyll sensors and field sampling at a finer spatial scale.

   Applicants from various backgrounds will be considered, including biology, hydrology, ecology, environmental science, chemistry, or related disciplines. The expected beginning stipend for this position is $29,333 and a tuition waiver will be provided throughout the duration of the project. The preferred starting date is June 2023.

The Centre for Advanced Research in Experimental and Applied Linguistics (ARiEAL) and the Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University invites applications for Masters and PhD studentships in theoretical and experimental syntax starting in September 2023.


We are seeking students with strong academic potential in theoretical linguistics to join the research teams led by Dr Alison Biggs (Grammatical Theory Group) and Dr Ivona Kučerová (Syntax Lab) at the ARiEAL Research Centre. Candidates should have research interests that align with the expertise of these groups, specifically in syntax and its interfaces, preferably approached from a comparative perspective. We seek both students interested in theory and fieldwork, and students interested in experimental syntax (EEG, eye-tracking). Students interested in working on Indigenous languages of North America and their revitalization, Chinese languages and dialects, Southeast Asian languages, Arabic (dialects), and understudied languages and dialects are especially encouraged to apply.


Applicants should have a strong undergraduate (Bachelors) or Masters degree in Theoretical Linguistics, Language Sciences, or related discipline, and will be expected to demonstrate excellent analytic skills, intellectual curiosity, strong writing skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.


Expectations:
As part of a research group, and depending on their level, the successful candidates should expect to conduct original research, both independently and collaboratively with other members of the research group(s); complete an independent research thesis; present research at (inter)national conferences; submit research results for publication in peer-reviewed academic venues; contribute to linguistic teaching through TAships; and organize and participate in reading and research groups, seminars, and workshops, associated with their lab, ARiEAL, or the Department of Linguistics and Languages.


Admissions and funding information:
Successful candidates will be admitted to the graduate program in the Cognitive Science of Language housed at the Department of Linguistics and Languages, Faculty of Humanities, McMaster University, and will be expected to complete the curriculum of the respective MSc and PhD degree.


Successful candidates will be awarded the standard MSc/PhD funding package and additional SSHRC-funded research scholarships or research assistantships.
