☑️ Plant Ecology
👩🏫 Dr. Amanda Taylor:
Job alert🚨: We are offering a 1 year postdoc position in plant ecology to analyse a nice dataset and lead publications on how orchid-mycorrhizal fungi interactions drive orchid spatial patterns across islands. Read on for details and link to apply. Thread.
This is a tail end of a DFG-funded project, which is why it’s only for 1 year 🙈it would be ideal for someone who recently graduated with a PhD and who wants a taster of what a postdoc is like, or a postdoc who is ‘in between’ projects and is already based in Germany/Europe.

here is the application link. Application deadline is February 10th 2023. Thanks

🇺🇸 PhD Positions in DNA Origami-Based Data Storage, Boise State University, USA
☑️ biology, chemistry, physics, materials science, synthetic biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field
The Nucleic Acid Memory Institute is looking for a Ph.D. student to join our project that aims to design, build, and test DNA nanostructures that store data in three dimensions. The candidate will learn cutting-edge techniques in DNA nanotechnology and Synthetic Biology in order to design, synthesize and characterize these nanostructures. The project will use Super Resolution Microscopy, because the designed DNA origami nanostructures emit fluorescence signals that are recorded at nanometer resolution using DNA points accumulation for imaging in nanoscale topography (DNA-PAINT). The candidate will join a diverse and multidisciplinary team with expertise in biology, biotechnology, computer science, microscopy and electrical engineering that is developing new microscopy hardware and new computational algorithms for the encoding and decoding of data, creating diverse training opportunities. We are looking for creative candidates that are motivated to explore the emerging field of DNA-based data storage. Students may pursue their PhD through interdisciplinary graduate programs in Material Science and Engineering or Biomolecular Sciences. Graduate students will receive a stipend, full tuition waiver and health insurance.
Preferred Qualifications: Interested students should have a B.S. or M.S. degree in biology, chemistry, physics, materials science, synthetic biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field. Prior experience with DNA origami or Synthetic Biology as evident by publications and presentations is especially preferred, but not required.
Please email msegrad@boisestate.edu if you are interested in joining our team.

🇺🇸 Postdoc position, MIT, USA
☑️ Engineering innate immunity // Host-pathogen interactions // Systems Biology // Tuberculosis
Bryson Lab:
Our lab is recruiting a postdoc to work on macrophages (phagosome biology and/or macrophage state)!
We are a diverse team of immunologists, microbiologists, and bioengineers, and our scientific priority presently is understanding how human innate immune responses contribute to Mtb control.
My advising commitment is to provide you with resources, tools, access, and guidance as we tackle big questions, and importantly, to me, to be your cheerleader.
Background with and/or desire to learn CRISPR screening would be awesome as I think these projects will need it!
Please email me bryand@mit.edu with a CV and we can set up a time to chat!

👨🏫 Dr. Craig Wilen:
PhD interview season is ramping up. Interviews will be new to most applicants, so here's my attempt to de-mystify the PhD student interview (my opinions only):
1) Be yourself. Don't be afraid to show your personality. (But do remain professional.)
2) Relax. Your interviewers are trying to get to know you, see how you think, and learn what motivates you. We aren't trying to trick you, quiz you, or make you regurgitate the TCA cycle or mechanism of VDJ recombination (this is saved for prelim exams).
3) What do interviewers want to see? For me, it is passion, perseverance, and critical thinking- typically in relation to science, but if you have a personal anecdote or story that conveys these traits outside of science that can be even more powerful. Please share.
4) Know the big picture of your project. If you studied the biochemistry of a malarial protease, know what you did and why & also how the parasite causes disease, evades the immune system, resists drugs, and its epidemiology. The active site mechanism is less imp than the big pic
5) Read the department and programs websites. Identify a few potential rotation labs that spark your interest. Come prepared with ?s but don't ask things that are clearly on the website. Save your 30min for more important discussions.
6) Check out the PIs website, read a recent review AND 1-2 last author papers from the lab. Its ok if you don't understand all the details but you should try. This helps you convey your passion/critical thinking and lets you share your science at the right level.
7) Re-read your application. If things changed since you applied, thats ok and feel free to share it. But don't discuss your life-long love of B cells when your application is about E. coli effector molecules.
8) If your project was a bust, thats totally ok. Share what went wrong and what you'd do differently next time. We know failure is part of science. If your project led to a Nature paper, thats also ok, but convey your specific contributions- should match your mentors letter.
9) Be kind to everyone. This includes other applicants, current students, admins, program coordinators, and interviewers. It is the right thing to do, and frankly if you act unprofessionally, the admissions committee usually finds out.
