🇺🇸 Master's Degree Program, University of Nebraska Omaha, USA
☑️ Herpetological Ecology
The Robbins Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) is seeking to recruit students for the Master's degree program. The lab focuses on the ecology and evolution of herptiles (reptiles and amphibians; www.therobbinslab.org). Current projects are examining phenotypic evolution of fence lizard (Sceloporus spp.) populations in response to thermal gradients associated with latitude. Phenotypes of interest are broad but include rates of embryonic development and hatchling growth as well as physiology associated with thermal tolerances, behavior, and hormone production.
UNO provides support through teaching assistantships (which include tuition waivers), as well as through faculty research grants. In addition, research and summer support funds are available on a competitive basis. UNO is located in the heart of the greater Omaha metropolitan area (over 930,000 people), and UNO currently enrolls approximately 3,000 graduate students and 15,500 undergraduates.
Interested students should contact Dr. Travis Robbins (trobbins2@unomaha.edu) prior to application to discuss possible thesis topics.
The deadline for applications for fall enrollment is 15 May.

🇺🇸 PhD position, University of California Irvine, US
☑️ Civil, Structural, earthquake engineering
👨🏫 Dr. Farzin Zareian:
(Professor at University of California, Irvine)
Professor Zareian is seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student in the area of seismic risk and resilience engineering to commence their studies in September 2023. The Ph.D. research would address the seismic performance of structures considering the effect of vertical accelerations. The research outcomes will have significant offshoots and will play a critical role in improving the performance of structures in seismic regions. The specific topic of the Ph.D. dissertation will be determined during the graduate program. The student will work under my direct supervision and be co-advised by Prof. Luis Ibarra from the University of Utah.
The Ph.D. research entails utilizing unique experimental and field data to validate modeling techniques to capture the impact of the ground motion vertical component. The latter will be used to benchmark the seismic performance of structures considering vertical accelerations. This research is a complete package, from data extraction to engineering implementation, and will produce the most complete and realistic modeling knowledge on the effect of vertical accelerations on structures. A viable candidate for this position should have:
1. An undergraduate (BS) and graduate (MS) degree in areas related to civil, structural, and/or earthquake engineering.
2. Background in statistical modeling and structural modeling for nonlinear time-history analysis.
3. Evidence of strong potential for conducting the mentioned research
The Ph.D. position is conditional upon successful admission to the Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate program. According to the UCI Graduate Division guidelines, the successful candidate will receive full support.
Prospective candidates should email Prof. Farzin Zareian (at zareian@uci.edu) with the following documents:
1. A one-page cover letter about the candidate's capabilities related to the project, and future professional goals.
2. Curriculum vitae.
3. Contact information of at least two references.
The deadline to receive your application is April 15, 2023.
