A fully funded PhD position (under the MIBTP BBSRC DTP program) is available within the lab of Dr. Abhinav KV (https://www.akv-lab.com) at Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology (LISCB), University of Leicester, UK to carry out structural studies on large macromolecular machines that undertake horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and phage defence mechanisms in bacteria. Both these avenues of research have important implications on global efforts to fight infections caused by persistent pathogens and combating antimicrobial-resistance (AMR).

The AKV-lab (https://www.akv-lab.com started in 2024 at the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) and Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical Biology (LISCB) within the University of Leicester (UoL), UK campus.
The campus offers support for international students and a vibrant international network. For this interdisciplinary project we offer a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment and access to world-class research facilities for biochemistry, microbiology, biophysics, structural biology and cryo-EM. It welcomes candidates passionate about structural biology, protein structure-function, host-pathogen interactions, molecular microbiology and infectious diseases. You will learn molecular cloning, advanced membrane-protein purification techniques, in-vitro and in-vivo structural determination of these multi-megadalton nanomachines using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). The project utilizes a multipronged approach involving techniques in biophysics, cross-linking mass-spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, integrative structural biology and live-cell imaging to address the scientific questions. Access to LISB's cutting-edge microscopy infrastructure, including the X-ray facility and state-of-the-art Titan Krios 300 keV microscope enhances this opportunity. We collaborate closely with Prof. Martha Clokie,
Department of Genetics and Genome Biology (GGB) and National Centre for Phage Research (UoL) for this project.

You should have:
A Masters (M. Sc., M. S., M. Tech) or a Bachelors (B.Sc., B. S., B. Tech) degree in :
Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics or related disciplines
Acquired previous experience working in a wet lab and excellent command of written and spoken English
Experience in recombinant protein expression/purification/structural biology (not required but preferable)
A strong motivation in pursuing biological questions and determination to actively contribute in establishing new research directions; strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Position details:
This position is funded for 4 years and is available from April 2024. This position is open for both UK as well as international students. Successful candidates will be provided with a full tuition-fee waiver and annual stipend for sustenance from University of Leicester, UK. The last date of application is 4" January 2024.

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a B.S. or higher degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Agricultural Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related fields; should have strong written and oral English skills; will be willing to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students to conduct lab research and the desire for fieldwork. Additional highly desirable qualifications that applicants can address in the statement of purpose include strong organizational skills, ability, and self-motivation to work independently while accomplishing high-quality tasks promptly. The other desirable technical qualifications include:
Skills: Embedded systems, Backend server, Robotics, full stack mobile development Programming Languages: Python, C++, C#, JavaScript, Dart

Closing Date: Screening of applicants will begin immediately and continue until filled. Applicants may be able to undertake spring and summer hourly employment before Fall 2024 quarter enrollment.
