30 PhD student and 2 post-doctoral positions
in the field of plant phenotypic plasticity, with a focus on quantitative genetics, cell, developmental and molecular biology, physiology, plant ecology, metabolomics, and computational modelling.
The approved first funding period for CRC 1644 is from 1 April 2024 to 31 December 2027.
Employment is thus possible for up to 45 months. The positions will be located at the University of Potsdam or one of the partner institutions named above.
Plants have colonised almost every habitat on Earth. A major feature that has enabled this success is the remarkable ability of plants to adjust their growth and development to variable environments. The ability of a given genotype to generate different phenotypes in different environments is termed phenotypic plasticity. Such plasticity is a universal feature of life, and understanding its molecular basis and evolution is a fundamental goal in biology that forms the focus of CRC 1644. To achieve this goal, our consortium integrates genetics, cell and developmental biology, physiology, evolutionary biology, functional ecology, computational biology and mathematical modeling. We strive for a step-change in our understanding of plant phenotypic plasticity as an evolving trait of critical importance for crop breeding and to the fate of plant populations under environmental change.
CRC 1644 provides an outstanding research infrastructure including a large interdisciplinary network of researchers, state-of-the-art facilities, and funding opportunities for conference vis-its, summer schools, hosting international experts, and acquistion of soft skills. CRC 1644 strives to increase the proportion of women in STEM research.

Project Denoscription:
Funded Academy of Finland, my Academy Research Fellow project aims to develop next-generation point of care device, via the integration of magnetic nanoparticles, electrochemical sensing assay and microfluidic chips. This interdisciplinary project offers a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of bioanalytical assay, enabling breakthroughs in healthcare and beyond.
Qualification requirements:
You must hold a Master's degree in Chemistry, Life Engineering, and Bio-nano Science, or a related fields. Applicants close to finishing their Master's degrees will be considered eligible to apply.
The selected candidate will carry out his/her doctoral studies in the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) and must meet the minimal requirements to receive doctoral study rights.
Fluent oral and written English skills similar to the level of IELTS 6.5, good communication and teamwork skills are required. Experience in academic writing and presentation skills are required.
Experience in microfluidics, nanoparticle, biosensor will be considered a plus.
5) Research experience in a multidisciplinary and multinational environment will be taken as a merit.
Most importantly, we expect the candidate to have a high motivation to conduct high-level research.
Position and salary:
The position is filled for a maximum of two-year period and additional 2 years depends on the continuing funding. The employment begins on 31 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary is roughly 2100 - 2400€ per month for an early stage researcher, depending on the appointee's qualifications and progress of the doctoral thesis. A six-month trial period is applied in the position.
