My research focuses on mobile health, biomedical applications of AI (OU has its own medical and healthcare center), LLM-based smart homes, buildings, and cities, and other multi-disciplinary collaborations with domain experts as well as industry professionals (OU has an AI institute out of a total 25 AI institute in US).

Research in this area involves high coding, math background, and hard work. Visiting scholars, and interns are also very welcome!

Two PhD positions are available in the Computational and Theoretical Multiphysics Laboratory (https://eng.famu.fsu.edu/~kshoele/CTML ) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Florida State University (https://eng.famu.fsu.edu/me). Research projects will involve interdisciplinary computational and theoretical investigations of fluid structure interaction of flexible panels.

The following skills/certifications/interests are relevant to the positions:
- An undergraduate degree in engineering or related fields with a solid background in fluid mechanics. Candidates who have already obtained a master's degree are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Previous research experience is highly desirable. Desirable research skills include computational fluid dynamics, and programming (Fortran and C++).
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Interest in new topics and interdisciplinary research

Four fully funded Ph.D. positions are available at the Flow Dynamics and Turbulence (FDT) Lab (https://lnkd.in/gDFPDvxF) at Mechanical Engineering at UT Dallas for Fall 2024 (Early Application Deadline to UTD: January 15).

1. Data-Driven Modeling of Air-Sea Interactions (ASI-ML): This collaborative project will integrate PIV measurements of wind-wave interactions with a high-fidelity digital twin model of the laboratory system to develop data-driven-based surrogate models for skin friction and form drag over surface waves.

2. Sea-Surface Drag Modelling using LESs (ASI-DSR): This collaborative research will focus on developing a sea-state-dependent parameterization of surface stress based on the scale-invariance argument of surface drag using a tight integration of infrared imaging technology and an LES framework for air-sea interactions.

3. Laboratory Measurements of Surface Waves (ASI-EXP): This project will investigate flows on both sides of the air-water interface by examining the kinematics and dynamics of turbulence structures that drive the interfacial fluxes and quantifying air-sea fluxes through laboratory experiments.

4. Large-Eddy Simulation of Langmuir Turbulence (LES-LT): In this project, we will use high-fidelity LESs to characterize the effects of spatial heterogeneity in atmospheric stress on the turbulence structure in the upper-ocean mixed layer and the evolution of Langmuir turbulence.

The “Food Processing Research and Extension Program” at Washington State University within the School of Food Science currently has four Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistantship opportunities available. The positions would start in the summer or fall semester of 2024. A brief denoscription of the project focus areas is below.

1) One Ph.D. opening focused on creating extrusion die designs for processing High Moisture Meat Analog (HMMA) products. A fundamental understanding of heat transfer and fluid mechanics is essential. The student should be interested in first principles modeling. Preferred chemical or mechanical engineering background and interest in food processing.

2) One Ph.D. opening focused on assessing the chemical and functional changes in proteins during extrusion processing. The successful student will have a fundamental understanding of thermodynamics and protein chemistry. Interest in applying analytical techniques relevant to proteins would be beneficial.  Preferred chemistry or chemical/biological/food engineering background.

3) Two Ph.D. openings focused on food ingredient functionality and food product development.  Requires a background in chemistry or food science with a strong interest in understanding the fundamental changes that occur in food ingredients as they are subjected to processes.
