Hi analysts! ⭐️
Let's continue topic Benchmarking (Part 1, Part 2) and discuss pros and cons of benchmarking.

✔️If a company has managed to collect qualitative data for comparison, then benchmarking will bring a number of advantages:
Rapidity - benchmarking allows you to quickly improve the quality of products by analyzing the advantages of competitors.
Prevention - analysis helps to prevent the occurrence of difficulties and loss of profit by studying someone else's bad experience.
Application of best practices - the method gives the company the opportunity to optimize its business by applying the best solutions of competitors.
Availability - benchmarking does not require significant financial and time costs.

At the same time, the use of benchmarking has some disadvantages, including:
Not answering the question “how” - we only find out “what needs to be done”, and then there is a creative process of developing new non-standard solutions to achieve success.
Not working with innovative products - benchmarking works only when we have something to compare with, but is poorly applicable when you want to release a brand new product that has no analogues.
Using open source information - only the information that competitors revealed will be used for analysis. This may limit information about internal processes or practical solutions that represent certain trade secrets.

Do you have something to add?😎

Hi analysts!⭐️
What do you think about tech skills for BA?

As a Business Analyst you’ve definitely heard about the Agile manifesto. It says that communication (a soft skill) is over documentation and tools. As most Business Analysts work in an agile environment, in comparison we can consider Hard Skills to be less important. However, the deeper understanding of customer’s business and the software to be developed you’d like to get, the more often you need hard skills. What are these? We will tell you about it in this article.

1. Data analysis: The ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets. This includes skills in data modeling, data mining, and data visualization. Power BI and Tableau can be found in job requirements denoscriptions much more often than years ago.

2. Technical knowledge: A business analyst in IT should have a good understanding of the technical aspects of the systems they are working with. This includes knowledge of databases and software development methodologies.
In one of our previous posts we also talked about knowledge of programming languages which is not a must and sometimes can even hinder you. Though there are some projects where this knowledge is almost a must (eg.: transition from monolithic to microservice architecture).

3. Business process modeling: The ability to model business processes is important for a business analyst in IT. This includes skills in process mapping and designing.

4. Requirements documentation: A business analyst in IT should be able to elicit, gather and document requirements from stakeholders. This includes skills in interviewing, surveying, and facilitating workshops etc.

5. Project management: A business analyst in IT should have a good understanding of project management methodologies and tools. This includes skills in project planning, scheduling, and risk management.

6. Quality assurance: A business analyst in IT should have knowledge of quality assurance methodologies and tools. This includes skills in testing, defect tracking, and quality metrics.

7. Last but not least: BA has to cope with process modeling using different diagrams.

There are many ways to gain technical skills such as studying theory from books/articles, passing a course on a specific topic and working on a project. We recommend you to start with a course on platforms such as Coursera, Udemy. Also some professional networks like LinkedIn have a solid knowledge base with 16.000+ courses. You can practice theoretical knowledge with tutorials and simulators such as www.w3schools.com. Most tools have created their own tutorials such as Power BI tutorial. And of course the final step is to gain practical experience on a real project.

Good luck with that!
