"Those are people, they're not cops."
Let's hear from the community. What are your demands from the government? What should happen to resolve all the systematic problems in the country?

Do we need policing? If so how should we handle it so abuse of power and the blue line doesn't exist. If not, what should the extent of public safety be?

Send your thoughts to @BLMProtestsBot and we'll share them here :)
"at the bare minimum, there needs to be a citizens oversight board of the police. a police department should never "investigate themselves"

AGREED!
"Abolish police unions"
"All PDs in this country need to be dissolved and recreated under community control, they are obviously out of the control and irreparable now"

"A citizens oversight board, for sure. But also use of force policies need to be very clearly in place and upheld. Required intervention, de-escalation, banning choke holds and any other use of force proven to be over utilized. Required reporting, and required to keep their body cams on or else face a fine or put on suspension. If they have to use escalated force they need to learn how to back off at the soonest possible point."

It's ridiculous how much of their training is in how to shoot and how to use force, but not when and how NOT to use it.
"an ideal world is the abolishment of PDs, and reformed way of “maintaining peace” and protecting citizens. but

- there must be civilian oversight boards in all cities
- no more lethal weapons/force. if not, there needs to also be an act to make it illegal to use a lethal weapon/force on an unarmed person/person with their hands up.
- restitution to all families who have lost a member to police brutality
- demilitarize the police
- de prioritize low level offenses

george floyd specific;
- charge and convinct all 4 police involved with ATLEAST second degree murder.
- reinstitution for george’s family"
"IMO decentralization of the federal government would get us closer to a type of government that will cover more people.
For example, coming from California, a lot of housing prices are insanely high. When the stimulus checks came out from the federal government, that amount sometimes doesn't even cover 1/2 of monthly rent for the poorer communities in California, although, it might be able to cover more of it in more rural parts of the country. Distributing based on national average leaves a lot of outliers unaccomodated for, and the working class in those areas tend to struggle more to make rent during the pandemic.
If the government were less centralized, focusing on what works for everyone, working class people everywhere can get the help they need better."
"Ban the use of chemical or explosive agents against civilians by the government or by entities working on behalf of the government and their subcontractors."

See, you'd think this would be action needed to be taken in a "third-world country" or countries the US typically sanctions for these reasons, but nope, just plain ol' murica.
This is something I've seen hinted at but I wanted to say this more clearly:

POTENTIALLY DEADLY FORCE SHOULD NEVER BE USED FOR MINOR CRIMES

"Counterfeit money" is not a crime that should EVER result in death, for example. I can't believe I actually have to say that; it's such a perverted system.

Opinion of an admin: I think the legalization of drugs should also play a huge role with the demands. How many people are in jail because of possession and sale and manufacturing of drugs? The war on drugs would really be a contender for the throne of what has done the most damage to society.

Drugs have literally been a part of society since....forever. It doesn't make sense to treat them like we do now.
"First of all there needs to be a largely unarmed emergency service that can arrive to de-escalate violent crime or crisises instead of just showing up to kill or brutalize whoever is present like the police currently do. Almost like a squad of social workers.

Otherwise, local areas should be empowered to largely police themselves by a democratic process (with some oversight so a majority can't engage in discriminatory policies). If "peace officers" were actually respected, known, and trusted by the people they were policing instead of outside occupiers interactions between citizens and police could be much less hostile. With this I assume a lot of non violent offences (like drugs ect.) would be decriminalized as well."
"On the question of what demands should look like / how to get rid of police: Identify things that the cops currently do and find other people in society that can fulfill that need in a better way, both economically and morally. For example, cops NEVER respond to a mental health crisis, so we look at how money cops spend doing that and we TAKE THAT SHIT and give it to medical professionals to be first responders. Rinse and repeat for all the absolute bullshit cops do every day."

"Honestly yeah legalizing drugs & doing more to rehabilitate addicts from a whole person perspective - not just churning them out after 30 days would help. The drug rehabilitation ring is pretty fucked up too since recidivism is highly profitable. There’s a whole dark side to that which I could rant about a long time. Most of the charges I see are low level drug charges. What’s even the point except to make people suffer unnecessarily."
