I hear the left credit Great Britain with leading the world in abolishing slavery, cast history as only whites owning slaves, that all our founders supported slavery, and that America is herself a symbol of slavery. All of which is false. Leftists also credit 1600's slave trading to America but that history does not belong to us. It belongs to the Spaniard and British elites.

Prior to our Revolutionary War, slavery was the world's economic engine. Britain was the leader in a global slave trade, the most powerful nation on earth, and certainly the most feared. Hence why our Independence is such a miracle in history.

Most delegates sent to our 1787 Constitutional Convention were natives of the original 13 Colonies. Of the 55 delagates, only 9 were born elsewhere: four (Butler, Fitzsimons, McHenry, and Paterson) in Ireland, two (Davie and Robert Morris) in England, two (Wilson and Witherspoon) in Scotland, and one (Hamilton) in the West Indies. Thus, our founders were born on this soil, not Britain's.

We rejected elitism and terminated our British allegence, association, and identity when we declared our Independence. Thereafter, our founders were no more British than Americans born here today are African, Irish, German, etc.

In 1777 (56 years before Britain), the State of Vermont, an independent Republic after the American Revolution, became the first sovereign State worldwide to abolish slavery. Though like everyone else, it took a while to take effect unanimously.

At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, Delegates were split on the topic of slavery when it arose and debated the moral question of human bondage and man’s inhumanity to man. The Delegates eventually agreed that slavery must eventually be abolished and that slave trading must cease within 20 years.

In 1807 Britain passed Abolition of the Slave Trade Act, outlawing British Atlantic slave trade. Not slavery.

In the same year the United States passed legislation banning the slave trade, effective Jan. 1808.

In 1833, Britain passes Abolition of Slavery Act, ordering gradual abolition of slavery in all British colonies, with the exception of "the Territories in the Possession of the East India Company", Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and Saint Helena. Plantation owners in the West Indies receive 20 million pounds in compensation ($16 billion today). Britain finally paid off this debt in 2015.

The Democrat's refusal to honor the aforementioned 20 year agreement and 1808 legislation is what led to the South seceding from the Union in 1860 to create the Confederate States of America, leading to our Civil War in 1861. We are the only nation in recorded history to fight a Civil War to abolish slavery. That is a unique precedent we set.

In 1862, President Lincoln proclaimed emancipation of all slaves with effect from January 1, 1863 (enabling black Americans to fight for thier freedom in the Union), and banned slavery in DC. The 13th Amendment to our Constitution followed in 1865 banning slavery nationally.

Also In 1862 (during our Civil War), the Lincoln administration attempted to pursue a compensated emancipation policy in the states bordering DC (2 years into our Civil War), but gave up after they bluntly rejected his offer. In the end, the government paid out an average of $300 per slave to the 979 owners of 2,989 slaves ($22.76M today).

This freed only .075% of all slaves and only slave owners who did not join the Confederacy to fight against the Union were ever paid.

So it wasn't "America," that didn't want to rid slavery. It was the Confederate States of America created by the Democrat Party that fought with thier lives to hold onto the "relics" of Great Britain: polygamy and slavery. Not America, Democrats.

Polygamy said women were the property of thier owners, just like slavery. Hence why Democrats fought against ending slavery, women's rights, and blacks and women gaining the vote.

Now to the slave owners.

Many people here did not own slaves before and after the founding of our country and before slavery was abolished.

Conversley, many blacks and Natives owned thousands of African slaves here, and many blacks were allowed to hold jobs, own businesses, and own real estate.

There were approximately 319,599 free blacks in the United States in 1830. Roughly 13.7% of the total black population was free (before Britian) and a significant number of these free blacks were the owners of slaves. The census of 1830 lists 3,775 free blacks who owned a total of 12,760 slaves.

Free black slave holders could be found “in each of the thirteen original states and later in every state that countenanced slavery,” historian R. Halliburton Jr. observed. So like white Confederate Democrats, free black people bought and sold other black people too.

In fact, In 1655 Anthony Johnson–a black man in Virginia–was, according to historians, among the first to have his lifetime ownership of a slave legally sanctioned by a court.

William Ellison was a very wealthy black plantation owner and cotton gin manufacturer who lived in South Carolina. According to the 1860 census (in which his surname was listed as “Ellerson”), he owned 63 black slaves, making him the largest of the 171 black slaveholders in South Carolina.

American Indians also owned thousands of African slaves. Historian Tiya Miles provides a snapshot of the Native American ownership of black slaves at the turn of the 19th century here:

Slavery was eliminated in America via the efforts of people of various ethnicities. The Republican party was formed to end slavery once and for all and took up the flag of the abolitionist movement (our flag today). This included American heroes such as David Walker, Frederick Douglass, Dred Scott, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Nat Turner, and many others.

When Congress passed (and the states ratified) the 13th Amendment in 1865, it was the culmination of many, many years of work by a multi-racial movement which began long before Britian's efforts.

It is important to remember that slavery was not unique to America, though our Civil War to end it was. All of the great empires throughout history owned, traded, produced, tortured, and killed slaves. Including the white chattel slave trade we never learned about or discuss. The history of the Europian slave trade is long and deep and there is a long trail of colored Muslims enslaving white Christians and vice versa, over and over, back and forth, throughout history.

For example, begining around 1600, the Muslim Barbaries bought and sold roughly 2 million white Christian Europeans in what is now Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya and ran congruent with the African slave trade. The Barbaries also landed on beaches and crept up on villages in the dead of night to capture their victims. In one such case, almost all the inhabitants of the village of Baltimore, Ireland were taken in this way in 1631.

This white slave trade lasted up until President Jefferson created the Marines to defeat the Barbary Pirates.

16th and 17th-century customs statistics suggest that Istanbul's white chattel slave imports from the Black Sea totaled around 2.5 million from 1450 to 1700. Istanbul banned enslavement of Europeans in the early 19th century.

By all historic accounts the white chattel slave trade was just as brutal as what Africans experienced here under the thirst of Spaniard and Europian elites and then Democrats after our founding.

But like King Leopold and Congo, this is a part of our forgotten history.

The reality is that all men, of all races, of all great nations across the world and throughout history have fallen victim to the greatest perversion of the the human imagination–slavery.

Our ancestors did not die in our Revolution and Civil War in vein. Black Patriots and black Republicans did not set a precident for not. Frederick Douglass and others did not leave a wasted legacy. Our World Wars were not won to be forgotten. The Civil Rights movement was not a failure, and MLK still lives in our hearts today.

So, to suggest that we have not achieved trancending things as Americans TOGETHER and that patriotism and unity is neither achievable nor an antidode is an affront to the reality of our history and the actual legacy it leaves for us to build on as one people and one nation, today.

The truth is Americans of all colors, creeds, and statuses have defeated tyranny over and over to advance our founding vision, constitution, laws, and history. Today, we stand on a MIRICALE foundation that enables us an opportunity to continue forward in a way humanity has never experienced before.
