Trump Frees Fraudster Just Days Into Seven-Year Prison Sentence - The New York Times
The headline writes itself: a man convicted of helping run a $1.6 billion fraud, with thousands of ordinary investors burned, gets a presidential commutation after less than two weeks in a seven-year sentence. That is not mercy in any meaningful civic sense. It is the modern American version of a velvet-rope exit door, reserved for the well-connected and well-bankrolled.
Start with the victims, because the story is designed to make you forget them. The case was not some technical misfiling about balance-sheet footnotes. Prosecutors described an operation that misrepresented fund performance and used new investor money to pay old investors, while roughly 10,000 people—farmers, nurses, veterans, small business owners—watched savings evaporate. The official line at sentencing was plain: this was fraud on an industrial scale, and prison was the consequence.
Then comes the commutation, delivered with the breezy confidence of a man flicking ash off a cuff. The White House defence says GPB disclosed in 2015 that investor capital might be used for distributions, so the “Ponzi scheme” label is unfair. Fine. Courtrooms exist to test that claim. A jury did. A judge did. A sentence followed. And now, by unilateral executive indulgence, the sentence becomes theatre: a stern warning one day, a punchline the next.
This is what political corruption looks like when it is wearing a suit and carrying a pen instead of a brown envelope. The clemency power is meant for miscarriages of justice and humane correction. Used like this, it becomes a private concierge service for a certain caste—those who can afford the lawyers, cultivate the contacts, and frame their criminality as mere entrepreneurial misunderstanding. The rest get moral lectures about personal responsibility. They also get to stay in prison.
Notice what else happens in the background. Civil actions grind on. Receivers try to recover hundreds of millions. Lawyers for investors describe “heartbreaking” losses and call the commutation unbelievable. In other words, the clean-up crew is still shovelling rubble while the man who lit the match is waved out with a smile. If that doesn’t teach every future fraudster the correct lesson—steal big enough, find the right patron—nothing will.
The deeper rot is not that a president can commute a sentence. It is that the act is now so predictably aligned with money, status, and political signalling that nobody is even surprised. The law survives only if it binds the powerful as tightly as it binds the powerless. When wealth and influence buy a trapdoor out of accountability, law turns into décor: impressive marble, hollow inside. And a republic running on décor is not a republic; it is a showroom for impunity.

SATOSHI WINNING AT LIFE
“For those who asked what I am eating.
This is not a “diet”; it is a refusal to outsource flavour to factories.
What sits in those pots is the difference between ingredients and products. Vegetables that were alive this morning still remember what they are supposed to taste like. Tomatoes that have not been bred for freight, beans that snap instead of apologising, herbs that announce themselves without being begged—basil that is sweet rather than decorative, tarragon that actually behaves like tarragon, thyme and oregano that do not need to be multiplied by fantasy.
Freshness is not a virtue signal; it is chemistry.
Making the stock in advance is the quiet discipline most people skip. That is where depth comes from, and it is why everything else can remain simple. Chicken that tastes of chicken does not require theatrics. A whole breast and a couple of drumsticks are abundance, not austerity, when the animal has not been drowned in brine and marketing. Enough for dinner, enough for breakfast, and no need to pretend restraint is suffering.
One must be also sensible where it matters.
Potatoes are commodities; growing them is romantic but economically irrational unless you are chasing heritage varieties for a specific purpose. Celery, by contrast, repays attention immediately—pulled from the plant, it breaks cleanly, smells green, and behaves like food rather than packaging filler. The carrot earns its place. The leek and spring onions announce provenance without fuss.
Salt. Pepper. That is it. Not because seasoning is sinful, but because it would be rude to interrupt.
This is how one eats when one understands that health is not a spreadsheet and taste is not optional. A baguette, rice or couscous—chosen later, without drama—because meals are meant to accommodate life, not dominate it. What matters is that the plate is built from things you can name, trace, and recognise, and that the result feeds both body and appetite without apology.
It is not ascetic. It is exact.”
