The tunnels, which are stone vaulted galleries with halls, were created by landowner Joseph Williamson between 1810 and 1840. The site was originally purchased by tobacco merchant D. Williamson, who employed former soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars to carry out secret work. However, it turned out that his group had discovered a tunnel system already in existence.
