Using microcomputer tomography and 3D scanning, researchers have discovered just how complex these miniature altars are actually arranged.
The inner layers are joined together by completely hidden seams that can only be detected with a microscope or X-ray. The individual fragments are attached to each other with tiny connecting pieces.
But much of the production process remains unsolved.
