This is the Paris Opera, or Opera Garnier after the architect Charles Garnier.
He was unknown and was working on small commissions in Paris when in 1861 a competition for designs for a new opera house was announced. At that time Charles was already 35 years old, and it often seemed to him that fate bypassed him. But he took part in the competition and won, being given the opportunity to dispose of rare and expensive materials for the decoration of the building. The result is this masterpiece that has survived through the ages.
