Fort Louvois

It was built on the islet of Chapoux between 1691 and 1694, during the reign of Louis XIV. The fort is located about 400 meters from the shore, opposite the citadel of the Château d'Oleron on the island of Oleron.

The fort was positioned so that the crossfire from the castle and the citadel would control the Channel of Maumusson and prevent access to the roads of Rochefort from the south. Fort Lavoie was a battlefield near the end of World War II, when bombings severely damaged the fort, making it necessary to rebuild it afterwards.

"Unbreakable" paints of ancient Egypt

This country is a favorite among archaeologists because many of the greatest discoveries of the past have been made there. Scientists believe that the sands of the Egyptian desert hide many more mysteries than we can imagine. Many tombs have been found there, but one in particular has striking drawings. The tomb is 4,400 years old and belongs to an official named Huvi, who lived at the time the pyramids were built. According to the innoscriptions on the walls, he was the only one close to the pharaoh and an important person. But it is not his mummy that is valuable, but the paintings that surround the sarcophagus. They show peasants working in the fields, ships sailing on the Nile and various ornaments. Sometimes, the processing of stones by our ancestors baffles modern science. Tambochai, Sigiriya are famous not only for their megaliths, but also for the unusual processing of them. Clear traces of stone melting, traces of rock flowing down do not fit the story of primitive peoples very well.

There is an interesting example at Machu Picchu, where both polygonal masonry and matching blocks, and a flat wall with no traces of machining, meet in one section.

About the "caves of heaven"

Mustang Kingdom is an isolated area of the Himalayan mountains. Some of the grottoes near the Tibetan plateau are made to the height of a ten-storey house. That the caves were used by humans is confirmed by the finds inside: household objects, hearths, cult objects and burials.

How did people climb to such heights? There had been no mountaineering equipment.

A map of the lost land of Wales - Welsh Atlantis - may have been found

Plato's account of Atlantis is the best known of its genre, but many cultures have their own legends of lost lands, and their many similarities lend plausibility to the idea. While we have many texts, there are very few ancient pre-Flood maps to help find lands lost to the rains. An example is the legendary lost kingdom of Cantr'r Gwaelod, the 'Lost Land of Wales', which has a beautiful mythical history and several reports of underwater sightings of its remains, but with no maps to pinpoint the land for modern searchers. That changed recently when two explorers studying the earliest surviving complete map of the British Isles discovered a couple of islands that are no longer on modern maps, and which may be the location of Cantr'r Gwaelod. I wonder what will happen next? Will we also be remembered as inhabitants of a lost land?

How were the fashionable Religious Miniature Samshite figurines made?

These wooden figurines were created during a short period of time between 1500 and 1530 in Flanders or the Netherlands. They are so miniature that we had to use a microscope and X-ray to study them.

Using micro-computer tomography and 3D scans, the researchers found out just how complex these miniature altars really are. The inner layers are connected by hidden joints, which can only be detected by microscopy or X-ray. The individual fragments are attached to one another by tiny connecting pieces.

Much of the manufacturing process still remains unsolved.

Is Vesuvius a volcano or a terricone?

Terricones are man-made waste rock dumps. Chemical reactions take place inside them. Excessive pressure inside them also causes an explosion, although it doesn't make them volcanoes.

To anticipate whether you are looking at a volcano or a waste rock, you can look down into the cavity at the top where the explosion or lava flow has occurred. The walls of the basin at the volcano should be melted, covered with liquid lava and the walls of the waste heaps should be composed of crumbly layers.

Vesuvius has no sign of molten lava.
