Lab Farm Grown Meat: A Series

Continuing our discussion on raising rabbits for meat —

Immediate Start:
One of the great benefits of raising rabbits for meat is that you can start today with almost no work because you can keep them in a hutch/cage and because you need to know almost nothing to start.

I've linked a youtube video that goes through the pros/cons of different ways of raising rabbits — in cages, a tractor, or in a colony. Caution: Do Not Go Into Analysis Paralysis. Just get a couple of meat rabbits and cages. Start. Just start. If you want to go for the tractor or the colony after time to consider and build, you can.

Cages and Hutches:
—2nd Hand: readily available. Search both terms on fb marketplace and Craigslist.
—DIY: You can build easily — my 10 year old daughter wanted a rabbit so badly that she spent a day building a hutch from imagination and scraps in the garage. This was a fantastic hutch, although it would have been better if she had looked online for design elements that would have made it easier to build and easier to use.
—Purchase: The wire cages made specifically for rabbits are not that expensive new.

ATTENTION: the one special thing you need to know about rabbit care is that they are very fragile to climate.
You must provide:
-shade
-cooling in the summer dependent on your climate
-protection from getting wet —which means an enclosed area of their hutch if the location doesn't provide rain protection
-wind protection

1789 Lenten Pie

We enjoy historic cooking and following the traditions of the liturgical year. This is a pie we have every Lenten season.

--4 servings of steel cut oats, made any time ahead
--peel and thin slice 2 medium apples + small chop an onion— soften together in butter. Remove
--wilt spinach in butter pan
--mix everything together. Add a few tablespoons of British Mixed Spice (this is our own modern addition)
— into a pie crust
—bake 375 for 45 minutes
—we enjoy it served with dijon mustard

(We learned about the basics of this pie from the Townsend's history channel on Youtube many years ago. I can't find the video now. Wonderful channel! https://www.youtube.com/@townsends)

Blessed 1st Sunday of Lent to you

I have been considering God's direction on why to fast and how to fast and found Isaiah 58 illuminating.

It was asked in the discussion group about spiritual reading that people are doing this Lent. These are mine.

St. Andrew's Daily Missal is a book that lays forth the traditional Catholic mass liturgical readings. During Lent, all readings are about Lent — connected Old and New Testament, prayers related, and an explanation of Lenten concepts related. The readings build on each other and give you a 40 Day deep dive into what Lent is about.

Celtic Lent by David Cole looks at Lent through the ancient and medieval lenses of the Celtic Christians.

I'll post interior content pictures in the comments.

This is the biggest breakthrough in European Archeology in decades! The oldest evidence of written language, previously believed to be from Mesopotamia, had now been discovered in Germany 📜

I have items in my home that might seem odd. One of them is a poor quality print of Marcus Garvey, with an instruction to his followers.

I display it as a reminder. A recent story I read out of NYC confirms my purpose.

The story is of a black man who walked the streets of Manhattan attacking white people. During his trial, he proudly claimed to be a descendant of Marcus Garvey — apparently, attacking white people Is his birthright. This is the way of thinking of many blacks in our countries -- and not just in cities. In fact, this is the thinking of someone in my nearby small town. I know this because I bought my print in that small town at the Goodwill for .99.

This print is evidence that there is someone in this small town who reveres Garvey. Who hates us. Who framed the instruction to "appear" harmless, to keep the business of their violent hate "entirely to themselves" until the right moment to STRIKE. They live where I take my granddaughter for ice cream. I can't forget it. I have a duty. As do you.
