The Two Books Of Imaam Ad-Darimee That Ibn Taymiyyah Strongly Advised With
The Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751H) rahimahullaah said:
His two books [i.e. of Ad-Daarimee, an-Naqdh 'alaa Bishr Mareesee (The Obliterating Critique Of Bishr al-Mareesee) and ar-Radd 'Alaa al-Jahmiyyah (The Refutation Of the Jahmites)] are from the most splendid books authored regarding the Sunnah (Creed) and from the most beneficial of them. Additionally, it is necessary for every student of the Sunnah who desires to stop at (i.e. understand and follow) the stance of what the Sahaabah and the Taabi'oon and the Imaams were upon, ought to read his two books.
Furthermore, Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah used to recommend and advise with these two books with the strongest of recommendations and regarded them in great esteem. In them both is affirmation of at-Tawheed and the Names and Attributes [of Allaah] through al-'Aql (sound reason) and an-Naql (text from the Book & Sunnah) that which is not found in other than these two [books]."

Evil Consequences For The Rejection Of The Truth
Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751H) rahimahullaah mentions:
Beware, beware of two matters that have evil consequences.
The first of them: Rejection of the truth because it opposes your whims and desires. So you will be punished with the turning of your heart away (from guidance) and with you rejecting whatever comes to you from the truth. And you will not accept the truth unless it is evidently in accordance to your desires. Allaah, the Most High, mentions: “And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance), just as they refused to believe in it (i.e. the revelation) the first time.” [Surah al-An'aam: 110].
So Allaah punished them - because of their rejection of the truth the first time - by turning their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance).
The Second (Affair): At-Tahaawan (wilfully neglecting and disregarding) a command (in the religion) when its time has arrived. So if you wilfully disregard it (i.e. a command) then Allaah will impede you and prevent you from those things which Please Him and His Commands; as (a form of) punishment for you. Allaah, the Most High, mentions: “If Allaah brings you back to a party of them (the hypocrites), and they ask your permission to go out (to fight), say: 'Never shall you go out with me, nor fight an enemy with me; you agreed to sit inactive on the first occasion, then you sit (now) with those who lag behind.'” [Surah at-Tawbah: 83].
So whoever is safe from these two great calamities and tribulations, then he will live comfortably with safety.

A Servant Is Always Between Thanking Allaah For His Blessings & Al-Istighfaar From Sins
Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaah said:
So the servant is always between a blessing from Allaah for which he needs to be thankful (Shukr) and a sin from which he needs to seek forgiveness (al-Istighfaar). And both of these are by necessity among the affairs that are always with the servant. For indeed he does not cease to remain fluctuating between the Blessings of Allaah and His Favours, and he does not cease to be in need of at-Tawbah (repentance) and al-Istighfaar (seeking forgiveness from Allaah for sins). And for this reason the chief of the son’s of Aadam, the Imaam of the Muttaqoon (the pious), Muhammad (ﷺ) would seek forgiveness in all circumstances. The Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said in a Saheeh Hadeeth, reported by [Muslim (no.2702)]:
"O people, turn in repentance to Allaah, for indeed I turn to Him in repentance a hundred times during the day."

The Legislated Knowledge
Question: Some individuals rely upon and study books of al-Fikriyyah (ideological thought) and ath-Thaqaafiyyah (educational and cultural sciences) then after that he presumes that he is an 'Aalim (scholar of the religion) and a Daa'iyyah (caller to Islaam) whilst he is weak in understanding of the religion and he has not studied the books of the Sharee'ah (Divine Legislation). So what is the advice of your eminence for the likes of that person?
The Shaykh Ibn Baaz rahimahullaah replied:
Knowledge is what Allaah said and what His Messenger said and it is not what so and so, and so and so says. Knowledge is what Allaah said and what His Messenger said, after that is the speech of the people of knowledge (Ahlul-'Ilm) by which they explain knowledge and clarify it to the people. The people of knowledge (Ahlul-'Ilm), after the Messengers, are Allaah’s Khulafaa (the appointed successors) amongst His servants.
The Mighty and Most High mentions:
Allaah bears witness that Laa ilaaha illaa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also bear witness to this); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. Laa ilaaha illaa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. [Surah Aali-Imraan: 18].
And true knowledge is to have knowledge of Allaah and His religion. He, the Most High, said:
It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allaah. [Surah Faatir: 28].
And they are the Messengers and their followers (from) the people of al-Basaa'ir (insight and understanding), the people of religion, the people of truth and the people of the Qur'aan and the Sunnah. So the scholars are the successors of the Messengers and they clarify (the religion) and they direct to Allaah and His religion.
The student of knowledge does not become from the people of knowledge (i.e. scholars) except by learning and contemplating upon the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) and taking from the scholars of the Sunnah. This is the path of knowledge; that is occupying oneself with being upon obedience, contemplation, comprehension, gaining benefit and that he reads the books which are beneficial for the student of knowledge from the beginning to its end. He should contemplate, comprehend and carefully read that which is difficult for him in the reliable books of at-Tafseer (exegesis of the Qur'aan), like the Tafseer of Ibn Katheer and al-Baghawee and their likes from reliable books of Tafseer. He concerns himself with the distinguished books of Hadeeth and takes knowledge from the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah from the people of insight; and not from the scholars of al-Kalaam (rhetorical speech and philosophy) and not from the scholars of innovation or the ignoramuses.
So the knowledge that is not from the book of Allaah and Sunnah of His Messenger is not called 'ilm (knowledge) rather it is called Jahl (ignorance). Even though it may be beneficial knowledge concerning the Dunya (worldly matters); but the intent is (the knowledge) which benefits in the Hereafter, rescues from al-Jahaalah (Ignorance of the religion), through it a person gains insight into the religion and acquaints him to what Allaah has obligated upon him and prohibited him from. This is al-'Ilm ash-Shar'ee (the legislated knowledge).
