Reviewing a year of data viz

At the end of the year people take stock and reminisce. This also applies to data visualization scientists. Reviews summarizing the best visualizations of 2021 were published. I particularly enjoy Maarten Lambrechts summary of all the “Best of 2021” posts.

This year, while musing whether to keep or toss my Nature print issues (still undecided!), I browsed the science visualizations of 2021. Well, I checked those about biology and medicine as I really do not understand enough of physics to get the visualizations in Nature. DNA Mutations Are Not Random: New Research Radically Changes Our Understanding of Evolution
Findings could lead to advances in plant breeding, human genetics.

“We always thought of mutation as basically random across the genome,” said Grey Monroe, an assistant professor in the UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences who is lead author on the paper. “It turns out that mutation is very non-random and it’s non-random in a way that benefits the plant. It’s a totally new way of thinking about mutation.”

Mutation bias reflects natural selection in Arabidopsis thaliana

We conclude that epigenome-associated mutation bias2 reduces the occurrence of deleterious mutations in Arabidopsis, challenging the prevailing paradigm that mutation is a directionless force in evolution.
