📰A Quick Guide for Building a Successful Bioinformatics Community
From abstract: “Scientific community” refers to a group of people collaborating together on scientific-research-related activities who also share common goals, interests, and values. Such communities play a key role in many bioinformatics activities. Communities may be linked to a specific location or institute, or involve people working at many different institutions and locations. Education and training is typically an important component of these communities, providing a valuable context in which to develop skills and expertise, while also strengthening links and relationships within the community. ....We present here a quick guide to building and maintaining a successful, high-impact bioinformatics community, along with an overview of the general benefits of participating in such communities.

📄A survey on deep learning in DNA/RNA motif mining
From abstract: DNA/RNA motif mining is the foundation of gene function research. The DNA/RNA motif mining plays an extremely important role in identifying the DNA- or RNA-protein binding site, which helps to understand the mechanism of gene regulation and management. Related algorithms can be divided into two categories: the enumeration approach and the probabilistic method. In recent years, machine learning methods had made great progress, especially the algorithm represented by deep learning had achieved good performance... We introduce the application of deep learning in the field of motif mining in terms of data preprocessing, features of existing deep learning architectures and comparing the differences between the basic deep learning models. ..

💫An Educational Bioinformatics Project to Improve Genome Annotation
From abstract: ... This Hypothetical Protein Characterization Project uses multiple well-documented, freely available, web-based, bioinformatics resources that analyze an amino acid sequence to (1) detect sequence similarities to other proteins, (2) identify domains, (3) predict tertiary structure including active site characterization and potential binding ligands, and (4) determine cellular location....
