Algeria, Africa's largest exporter of natural gas, talks about joining BRICS
"The BRICS interest us" as an alternative to traditional power centres, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said in a television interview.
The BRICS group includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Algiers:
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has hinted that his country, Africa's largest exporter of natural gas, could join the BRICS economic group, which also includes Russia and China.
Tebboune's comments came after Russian President Vladimir Putin - whose country is under Western sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine - called on BRICS leaders in June to work towards the "formation of a truly multipolar system of interstate relations".
The BRICS group also includes the major emerging economies of Brazil, India and South Africa.
"The BRICS interest us" as an alternative to the traditional power centres, Tebboune said in a television interview late Sunday. "They represent an economic and political force".
He stressed that there was no need to "get ahead of things" but promised "good news".
The president added that his North African country met "a good part" of the economic criteria for joining the bloc.
BRICS members currently account for almost a quarter of the world's gross domestic product.
Tebboune attended a virtual BRICS summit in late June, where Putin called on the group's leaders to work together in the face of "selfish actions" by the West.
The sanctions against Ukraine have prompted Putin to seek new markets and strengthen ties with countries in Africa and Asia.
Algiers abstained when the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution in March calling on Russia to immediately withdraw from Ukraine.
China, India and South Africa also abstained.
On a visit to Algeria in May, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said trade between his country and Algeria had reached $3 billion last year.
