According to the report, Chinese firms are increasing their representation in the Top 10 ranking of firms involved in AI research. The study in particular cites Chinese holdings such as Tencent Holdings, Alibaba Group Holding and Huawei Technologies that have enabled China to gain a decisive lead in most cited papers on the topic, a qualitative measure in the field.
In 2012, U.S. companies produced 629 of the most-cited papers, while China was in second place at 425. This dynamic flipped by 2019, when China overtook the United States, and the most recent figures for 2021 reveal China now accounted for 7,401 of the most-cited papers. This stunning figure represents a surpassing of American firms in output by 70%, indicating the Chinese lead in the field may now be decisive.
