The Great Fire of London devastated the city, burning vast areas of its old wooden buildings to the ground. The reconstruction that would follow founded a city of marble upon the ashes. The human cost was not however forgotten among London's new splendor with the state laying down the Monument to "better to preserve the memory of this dreadful visitation".
It stands today as a Celebration of English resilience and endurance, representing our ability to endure and overcome the often incredible odds that challenge us - an ability that still lies within the heart of every Briton.

Built over hundreds of years from 1079 to 1532, Winchester Cathedral is among the oldest and largest Cathedrals in Great Britain, having survived civil wars, the fires of the reformation and the devastation of the World Wars largely untouched.
In its halls several Kings of Wessex are laid to rest, as well as the Viking King Cnut and a number of medieval Bishops. In more recent times it has become known for its memorials for soldiers killed in the various Colonial conflicts.
