The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was one of the largest battles of the First World War. Fought between July 1 and November 1, 1916, near the Somme River in France, it was also one of the bloodiest military battles in history.

#OnThisDay in 1986 the IRA murdered joiner, Robert Hill, 22. Murdered using an under car bomb when leaving for work in a Ballynahinch furniture factory. The wreckage from the blast scattered over a 100m radius. A local who taught the off duty UDR man in Sunday school described Hill as “a nice quite hard working lad”
Never forget those slain.

KIA 1 July 1916. A 32 year old architect from Manchester, considered too old for a commission Charles Stenhouse enlisted as a private. Gaining a commission in early 1915, by June 1915 he had been promoted to Lieutenant.
