Today in 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. (ship's time) on her maiden voyage and sank 2 h 40 min later on 15 April 1912.
This tragedy claimed some 1,500 lives, and proved to be the deadliest commercial maritime disaster.
The Titanic was under the command of Capt. Edward Smith, who also went down with the ship.
