Badlands are a type of terrain consisting of soft, mudlike soil and harder sedimentary rocks that have been dramatically eroded by wind and water over time. The terrain is characterized by deep drainage gullies and distinctive hoodoos, formations of harder capstone sitting atop a softer rock layer that gradually wears away. This erosion process leaves tall columns that are typically very delicate and prone to damage. Badlands are found in every continent except for Antarctica and are prevalent in many parts of North America. These formations were photographed in New Mexico as single- and multiple-exposure images.
