🇪🇺❇️ Hydrogen is gaining ground in EU

The H2Med project proposed in October is a step towards green economy. It is supposed to substitute the MidCat pipeline project pitched by Spain and Portugal but opposed by France.

▪️European Union’s energy network is being transformed now. The H2Med will connect Spain, Portugal and France becoming a part of the Green Energy Corridor.

▪️Leaders of France, Portugal, and Spain — Emmanuel Macron, António Costa, and Pedro Sánchez — set a high priority to the project after discussing it in detail. Initially the H2Med was planned for transportation a portion of natural gas. That would be a temporarily solution. But after evaluation of all related expenses the parties decided to only use it for hydrogen transportation. This will allow to use European financial aid for green projects. According to estimates, the pipeline will only come into operation in 2030. This leaves enough time for project study and adaptation.

▪️How much will it cost?
The subsea hydrogen pipeline will cost around €2 bln. If the cost of land infrastructure is added, the total amount rises up to €3 bln. The heads of Spain, Portugal and France are going to discuss details today with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the meeting in Alicante (Spain). Construction timeline and the pipeline financing will be the main points of discussion. The final cost of the project may change depending on the underwater route.

▪️Given that this project falls into the green agenda, the leaders of all three countries involved will apply for European Union funding next week, according to Reuters data.

▪️Cepsa green energy activity
Many EU and multinational companies are focusing now on hydrogen projects. Spain and Portugal have been ramping up efforts to develop green energy infrastructure and ensure supplies as the global energy crisis unfolds. Recently Cepsa oil company presented its «Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley» located in the San Roque (Cádiz) region.

▪️The first European Н2 corridor project is being developed by Cepsa. It will connect the Campo de Gibraltar and the Dutch port of Rotterdam. The main objective is to produce green hydrogen in Andalusia. It will help to avoid the emission of three million tonnes of CO2 per year. Cepsa is going to invest about €3 billion into this project.

Now in Spain there are 29 green hydrogen projects with total investment of €890 million. While presenting «Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley», the Spanish president announced that the provisional resolutions of the first Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) for Renewable Energies, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage amount to €250 million. These are not very big amounts, but they clearly indicate that investors are looking at Spain as at a new hydrogen hub. The Hydrogen Roadmap for 2030 received endowment of €6.9 billion of public funds, 22% of which will be expressly dedicated to hydrogen.

🔺The EU energy balance is being diversified. It’s still linked to gas, because 75% of hydrogen now is produced from gas. Renewable sources are the only ones that can be used to produce green hydrogen. That is why it opens a discussion on the classification of renewables. It’s quite a hard task to produce enough hydrogen only with solar and wind power sources. Even if nuclear energy will be included into «renewable» category, the total volume of produced hydrogen will hardly coupe with the demand of EU industry. This opens way for further deindustrialization of EU, making it a zero-emission place with near-to-zero jobs in the long run.

🔴 Drug cartels’ activities is one of the worst things that impacts the situation in Latin America. Cartels’ members not only distribute dangerous substances, but also are quick at making away with those who get in their way – often unintentionally.

This keeps people at bay, doesn’t let them live peacefully, and makes them flee – and live in poor conditions. This is the problem to be handled, but governments seem not to be somehow worried about it.
