The Department of Energy is providing a nearly $400 million loan to a startup aimed at scaling the manufacturing and deployment of a zinc-based alternative to rechargeable lithium batteries. If realized, Eos Energy’s utility- and industrial-scale zinc-bromine battery energy storage system (BESS) could provide cheaper, vastly more sustainable options for the country’s burgeoning renewable power infrastructure.

🇩🇪 German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, called AfD a "demolition commando threatening Germany's prosperity".

Speaking in front of his party's MPs, Olaf Scholz claimed that "the majority of German citizens are aware that AfD is a demolition commando threatening our country".

"Rebuilding the barriers between the member states of the European Union and a defunding of the welfare systems are nothing more than a deliberate attempt to destroy the prosperity" added Scholz.

Olaf Scholz appealed to the conservative CDU/CSU for support in his fight to fix the German economy. Scholz commented saying "It can't go on like this" blaming the CDU/CSU for Germany's stagnating economy, which led Germany until the end of 2021. Scholz excluded an economic stimulus plan saying that Germany doesn't need to take anymore debt at the moment, while planning austerity measures beginning in 2024.

AfD has reached a record high with 22% in the polls meanwhile Scholz's own party, the SPD, fell to 16%, a record low. The German economy is faced by a diminishing industrial output, caused by high utility costs causing a high inflation rate. The German economy is also bad at encouraging competition

🇫🇷 Emmanuel Macron is planning a referendum on migration signaling a major shift in policy for Paris.

After a dialogue with representatives of France's right-wing parties, Les Républicains (LR) and Rassemblent Nationale (RN), the French government announced plans to put up for debate a change in France's policy on the repatriation of first arrivals reaching French territory.

A government envoy stated that the "immigration problem" will be dealt with this autumn through a bill and a referendum with possible changes to the French Constitution which the LR and RN pushed for in the past.

LR leader, Eric Ciotti, wants a referendum on the proposed constitutional immigration law, while RN leader, Jordan Bardella, wants to have the referendum on immigration on the same day as the Europarliamentary elections in 2024.

As it stands now, French president, Emmanuel Macron, appears to have caved in on immigration, expected after the riots which shook France last summer.

🔶️ Categorically, foreign fighters (“volunteers”) are independent actors. Independents, private enterprises, and commercial organizations are rising in global influence and power. Their use in war is no exception.

🔶️ Ukraine enabled speed with the hope of creating scale. How many fighters came? How many stayed? Accurate numbers are hard to determine. In March 2022, the Ukraine Defense ministry claimed that 20,000 volunteers had come to Ukraine. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands more are filling non-combatant roles both inside and outside of Ukraine.

🔶️ The Islamic State (ISIS), a proto-state at one time, offers another example of online recruiting and the incorporation of volunteers into a formidable fighting force. 

🔶️ The Ukraine war will end. When it does, there will be over ten million Ukrainian combat veterans, perhaps more. Ukraine will offer a ready-made pool of ideologically committed and combat experienced volunteers. Many would—for different reasons and rationalities—put down the pitchfork and pick up the rifle. For any country that faces a campaign of annihilation or a heinous foreign occupation such as Ukraine, this option will be attractive. If considered and planned now, it could also be effective.

As the NFL season kicks off, millions of Americans will be glued to their television screens (or whatever screens their watching on), happy to finally see the return of their favorite sport.

According to Statista Consumer Insights, American football – or just football depending on where you live – is still the clear number 1 sport in the United States. 77 percent of U.S. adults who generally follow sports said they follow football, putting it far ahead of basketball, followed by 59 percent of respondents, and baseball at 50 percent.

But, as Statista's Felix Richter reports, while football has been America’s true favorite pastime for decades (sorry baseball), that doesn’t necessarily mean things will stay that way forever.

The NBA has been quicker to embrace the change in sports consumption, catering to an audience that is more likely to watch highlight clips on social media than sitting through entire games on ESPN. The fact that basketball is also easier to pick up and play casually adds to the sport’s popularity among young fans, not to mention the appeal of superstars such as LeBron James, who are deeply ingrained in popular culture.
