🔶️ Categorically, foreign fighters (“volunteers”) are independent actors. Independents, private enterprises, and commercial organizations are rising in global influence and power. Their use in war is no exception.

🔶️ Ukraine enabled speed with the hope of creating scale. How many fighters came? How many stayed? Accurate numbers are hard to determine. In March 2022, the Ukraine Defense ministry claimed that 20,000 volunteers had come to Ukraine. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands more are filling non-combatant roles both inside and outside of Ukraine.

🔶️ The Islamic State (ISIS), a proto-state at one time, offers another example of online recruiting and the incorporation of volunteers into a formidable fighting force. 

🔶️ The Ukraine war will end. When it does, there will be over ten million Ukrainian combat veterans, perhaps more. Ukraine will offer a ready-made pool of ideologically committed and combat experienced volunteers. Many would—for different reasons and rationalities—put down the pitchfork and pick up the rifle. For any country that faces a campaign of annihilation or a heinous foreign occupation such as Ukraine, this option will be attractive. If considered and planned now, it could also be effective.

As the NFL season kicks off, millions of Americans will be glued to their television screens (or whatever screens their watching on), happy to finally see the return of their favorite sport.

According to Statista Consumer Insights, American football – or just football depending on where you live – is still the clear number 1 sport in the United States. 77 percent of U.S. adults who generally follow sports said they follow football, putting it far ahead of basketball, followed by 59 percent of respondents, and baseball at 50 percent.

But, as Statista's Felix Richter reports, while football has been America’s true favorite pastime for decades (sorry baseball), that doesn’t necessarily mean things will stay that way forever.

The NBA has been quicker to embrace the change in sports consumption, catering to an audience that is more likely to watch highlight clips on social media than sitting through entire games on ESPN. The fact that basketball is also easier to pick up and play casually adds to the sport’s popularity among young fans, not to mention the appeal of superstars such as LeBron James, who are deeply ingrained in popular culture.

I've been reading "The Second World War" by Sandhurst military Historian John Keegan...

It explained a ton about 19th century/early 20th century military culture I didn't get.

The Edwardians were patriotic as hell. the Military was massively popular.

The Average person ate 1200 calories a day, whereas soldiers in Garrison ate 1400 and higher quality food at that, it was a massive education and networking opportunity for people of all classes, and produced bonds that would be necessary for social advancement.

Connoscription was massively popular and demanded from the population during peacetime, less because they wanted to make sure no one was shirking, and more because they didn't want lower class people left behind and all the opportunity in the army horded by the connected who'd be able to get into a volunteer force.

In Britain which had always abhorred connoscription and had Whig (proto-libertarian) objections to it... the populace practically rebelled and formed illegal regiments and militias and drilled to participate in martial life... this was a phenomenon across Europe and after the treaty of Versailles restricting Germany to a scant 100,000 strong army, the country was flooded with Freikorps, non-government paramilitaries and militias to either advance some political movement or just be part of military life.

This follows the scrubbing of what was expected to be the first test launch of one of these weapons, which the Army is developing in cooperation with the U.S. Navy, using the former service's ground-based launch system earlier this year. The long-standing goal has been to field the first operational Dark Eagles before the end of this year and the first unit to be equipped with them has already stood up.

Published on Thursday, the new report (see .pdf) examines the billions of dollars spent by NASA on the development of the massive rocket, which made a successful debut launch in late 2022 with the Artemis I mission. Surprisingly, as part of the reporting process, NASA officials admitted the rocket was too expensive to support its lunar exploration efforts as part of the Artemis program.

"Senior NASA officials told GAO that at current cost levels, the SLS program is unaffordable," the new report states.

🛡 🇺🇸 Ukraine Changes Army’s Thinking About Battle Tanks: New Build Program Announced

🔶️ The Army announced Sept. 6 that it will no longer upgrade its old M1E3 Abrams Main Battle Tank and that it will build a new fighting vehicle instead.

🔶️ The Army will close out the M1A2 System Enhancement Package version 4 effort and develop M1E3 Abrams, “which will focus on making the capability improvements needed to fight and win against future threats on the battlefield of 2040 and beyond,” an Army statement said.

🔶️ Initial operational capability is anticipated in early the 2030s, the statement said.

🔶️ Dean said: “the Abrams Tank can no longer grow its capabilities without adding weight, and we need to reduce its logistical footprint."

🔶️ The Army will continue to produce the M1A2 SEPv3 at a reduced rate until production transitions to the M1E3 Abrams, and the Army will carry technologies forward into the SEPv4 Abrams modernization effort, the statement said.
