🇺🇸🇪🇺 EU admits it can’t fulfill $600 billion investment promise to the U.S. — just hours after making it

During trade talks, the EU pledged to invest $600 billion into the American economy. But as Politico reports, just a few hours later, Brussels admitted it doesn’t have the authority to make such a commitment.

Ironically, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán pointed this out earlier today. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

🇺🇸🇨🇴 Marco Rubio: Trial Against Colombia’s Uribe ‘Sets a Worrisome Precedent’

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the verdict in the ongoing trial in Colombia against former President Alvaro Uribe, who was found guilty today on two of the three charges he faced: bribery in criminal proceedings and procedural fraud.

Rubio wrote on his official account on the social media platform X that the trial “sets a worrisome precedent” in Colombia, claiming the criminal proceedings reflect a “weaponization of Colombia’s judicial branch” carried out by “radical judges.”

🇺🇸🇪🇺 Harsh Reality of US Trade Deal Stirs EU Angst

European Union leaders are working through the consequences of their new trading arrangement with the US, and confronting the reality of just how far they have fallen.

The terms of the framework deal agreed on Sunday will mean a significant hit to European companies — the EU accepted a tripling of tariffs to 15% on most exports to the US and will keep its own levies on American goods to 1% or less once the pact goes into effect.

European ambassadors meeting in Brussels yesterday recognized that European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen had no choice but to agree to the unbalanced terms. But politicians have begun expressing concern about the the bloc’s loss of clout. The euro, meanwhile, dropped to a five-week low of $1.1527 today, having fallen about 1.8% since the accord’s announcement.

So while the deal lowers the risk of a trade war that would deal a severe blow to the global economy, there’s more horse trading yet to come and it’s unclear that it will bring stability to transatlantic relations.

🇺🇸🇪🇺 Trump’s $750 Billion Deal for U.S. Energy Collides With Market Reality

EU has pledged to increase purchases of American oil, natural gas and nuclear fuels, but exporters might struggle to meet demand

The energy deal is a centerpiece of the trade agreement reached between Washington and Brussels on Sunday, which sets baseline U.S. tariffs at 15% for most European goods. The EU has agreed to buy $250 billion worth of U.S. oil, natural gas and nuclear fuels per year for three years, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

To fulfill the pledge, the EU would have to purchase more than double the amount of American energy it did last year—while the U.S. would need to significantly ramp up its energy exports.

The commitment appears more aspirational than realistic, analysts said. Purchases of the agreed-upon magnitude would require a major rearrangement of energy flows, and it isn’t clear whether U.S. companies could even export that much. Private companies, which constitute the majority of Europe’s energy importers, would also need to be persuaded to give priority to a political directive over market trends.

“It’s a nice number but it’s just not realistic,” said Warren Patterson, head of commodities strategy at ING Bank. “You’d essentially have to divert all energy trade. That’s just not possible.”

“Even if the EU were to buy the entirety of U.S. crude and LNG exports, the annual value of its purchases would total only $141 billion,” according to research firm Gavekal. It based its figures on current prices and the U.S.’s estimated year-end LNG export capacity.

Another fundamental obstacle is that private companies, not governments, handle most energy procurement in the EU. Their decisions are typically guided by market prices and consumer demand.

Brussels can’t dictate to private companies where they buy energy, said Marc-Antoine Eyl-Mazzega, director of the energy and climate program at French think tank Ifri. “This is a private industry in Europe as much as in the U.S.,” he said.

There are also questions about whether the U.S. could deliver enough energy to hit the target. American LNG terminals, where natural gas is supercooled and loaded onto tankers, are already operating at near-full capacity. While companies are expanding facilities in Louisiana and Texas, this process will take several years.

On the European side, U.S. energy would encounter significant infrastructure bottlenecks. Europe’s re-gasification and pipeline networks, which receive and process LNG, are stretched to their limits, and expansion would require huge investment. The region’s refineries would also likely struggle to process extra volumes of light U.S. crude to produce diesel.

There could be environmental pushback too. Large additional imports of U.S. energy might clash with the EU’s goal of reducing fossil fuel consumption.

🇩🇪 German courts gave 10 months of probation to a 24 year old Lebanese man who beat to a pulp a German female police officer on New Year's Eve 2023/2024.

The trial started after two years of delays from the Lebanese man who remained unnamed, only being identified as part of the Remmo Clan, a Lebanese-Arab Clan which is tied to several museum heists where millions of EURs in treasures and artifacts were stolen to be sold on the black market or melted for their metal.

The Lebanese man beat up the policewoman after she had accidentally hit with her car the man's sister which sent him into a rage. This state of rage was considered excusable enough by judge, Judith Anders, to let the man go with 10 months probation and a 4000 euro fine.

The policewoman spent two months in hospital and recovery, had to move to an office, not going on patrols anymore and stills suffers with psychological trauma from the incident.
