It is true that the U-2 spy plane, flying at an altitude of approximately 70,000 feet, was thought to be beyond the range of Soviet surface-to-air missiles at the time of the U-2 incident in 1960.

As for Powers' survival, it is true that the odds of surviving a bailout at that altitude and speed were slim. However, Powers was wearing a pressure suit which helped to protect him from the extreme altitude and low temperature. Additionally, he had been trained to use a special parachute designed for high-altitude ejections, which may have increased his chances of survival.

President Eisenhower famously warned against the dangers of the military-industrial complex in his farewell address in 1961.
Ultimately, while the U-2 incident and its aftermath certainly had significant implications for US-Soviet relations and the Cold War, it is important to avoid oversimplifying the complex factors that contributed to this event and its aftermath.
