Yes, Congress did hold hearings and investigations regarding Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. After the election, there were allegations that Russia had engaged in hacking and other activities to influence the outcome of the election. These allegations primarily focused on Russian efforts to hack into Democratic Party email accounts and release the stolen information through platforms like WikiLeaks.
In response to these allegations, several committees in the United States Congress conducted investigations to examine the extent of Russian interference and assess the impact it may have had on the election. The two primary committees involved in these investigations were the Senate Intelligence Committee and the House Intelligence Committee.
The Senate Intelligence Committee, led by both Republican and Democratic members, conducted a thorough investigation into Russian interference. The committee held public hearings, interviewed witnesses, and reviewed classified intelligence materials. Their investigation resulted in a bipartisan report released in 2020, which concluded that Russia did interfere in the 2016 election to undermine American democracy but did not find evidence of direct collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Similarly, the House Intelligence Committee conducted its own investigation into Russian interference. The committee held public hearings and conducted interviews with witnesses. In 2018, the committee released a final report that also concluded Russia had interfered in the election and highlighted various concerns related to cybersecurity and the protection of democratic processes.
It is important to note that while these investigations focused on Russian interference, they did not specifically center on the accusation that Russia "hacked" the election itself. The investigations primarily examined Russian efforts to influence public opinion, spread disinformation, and hack into email accounts of political entities.
