I suck in the f4 phantom and while I have a pretty good idea of how to dogfight none of the American planes can dogfight at all basically
The war thunder American tech tree for aircraft is kinda ass ngl or just doesn't fit my style of fighting
1) I suck at aiming in jets , I'm used to the shorter target leading distance and closer combat of propeller aircraft
2) the American F4-E is best used as a missile truck basically, the only issue is that the radar sucks on it (it lacks pulse doppler radar, instead of pulsing and using the doppler effect to track targets (radio wave is moving at speed of light, target is moving at 1000mph away from you, radio signals from target are shifted to c-1000mph/speed of light of their frequency on the EM spectrum, lot more complicated math but same effect as ambulance tone shift while it's moving, fun fact you can actually see this while recording the signals from the NOAA weather satellites using sdr, their frequency shifts from high to correct to low as it passes overhead) the phantom does not have this advanced level and I believe is just using the prominent return of the radar reflections which can be easily spoofed with chaff
The AIM7-E-DF missile (df means dogfight, it is meant to pull high g force at close range) uses the f4-e's radar to lock on to a target, idk if its active communication but when lock is lost there's a high chance the aim 7's lock is lost as well (with exceptions)
Pulse Doppler radars are much better at filtering out the reflections of the ground and as such the F4-E is at a significant disadvantage when trying to lock targets that are lower altitude, this makes the AIM7's really only usefull for targets that are at a higher altitude, particularly catching targets in the middle of a dogfighting loop at the top, where they have the least energy and are the most vulnerable
3) basically every jet out maneuvers the F4 phantom, it's really only super good quality flight performance wise is the 2 gigantic afterburning engines that give the jet an impressive thrust to weight ratio and top speed, however the F4 will lose energy quickly in a fight
Not as quick as some other aircraft but the F4 is essentially a brick at low speeds
While the engines do provide some advantage their size and power give off alot of heat while running, making the IR signature gigantic and an easy lock on for IR missiles
4) The modification research tree for the F4-E gives it a hilariously bad load out when the jet is first unlocked, the earlier AIM7 and AIM9 missiles suck and the jet is tiered into games with jets that can outperform the F4 and better missiles
5) the F4-E "phantom II" is designed as a multi role aircraft, the range of armament that it can carry is impressive and essentially makes it a great bomber, besides the fact that it's a flying brick when fully loaded and high G maneuvers may rip the wings off when fully loaded with ordinance, it can take out 1 1/2 bases though which is excellent compared to some other aircraft
6) I am not familiar with the advanced radar controls and I think I'm going to set up my macro keys on my keyboard as some special functions for the more advanced systems, in order to fight effectively the radar needs to be basically relied upon for high speed tracking and cannon lead predicting for close combat
