Jesus has many who love His kingdom, but few who like to carry His cross. He has many who desire consolation, but few tribulation. He finds plenty of table companions, but few abstinent ones. Everyone wants to rejoice in Him, butfew want to endure anything for Him. Many follow Jesus to the breaking of the bread, but few to the drinking of the cup of the Passion.Many venerate his miracles, but few follow the ignominy of the Cross. Many love Jesus, while adversitydoes not touch them. Many praise and bless Him as long as they receive any consolation from Him, but if Jesus hides and abandons them for a while, they fall into complaints or great dejection. But those who love Jesus for Jesus' sake, and not for themselves, bless Him in all tribulation and distress, as well as in the greatest consolation. And, even if He never wanted to give them consolation, they would always praise Him and always want to give Him thanks. Oh, how much pure love for Jesus can do, unmixed with any personal comfort or self-love!
