How will MTG-S improve people’s lives?
MTG-S is specifically designed to enhance the "nowcasting" of severe weather events - the ability to detect and predict rapidly developing storms in the short term.

Unlike traditional satellites that capture 2D images, MTG-S is equipped with a sounding instrument that measures infrared spectra for each pixel. This results in data that can be thought of as images across thousands of spectral channels.

By analysing this detailed information, scientists can retrieve key atmospheric properties such as temperature and humidity. This enables earlier detection of fast-developing storms, significantly increasing the lead time for weather warnings, ultimately helping to protect lives and property.
