RT @aravindEO: 🛰️🌍 . @eumetsat's Meteosat Third Generation Sounder-1 (MTG-S1) developed by @ESA_EO is launching today on @SpaceX and it is a big deal for weather forecasting in Europe and Africa.

Why? It is Europe's first satellite with a hyperspectral infrared sounder in geostationary orbit i.e. it is a major upgrade from just “looking” at the atmosphere (with imagers) to actually “sensing” it in 3D (with sounders) every 30 minutes.

So what? A detailed view of the atmosphere in near real-time means more accurate short-term forecasts and more reliable early warnings including better turbulence predictions and air-traffic management (how many delays or cancellations have you dealt with this year due to bad weather?!).

As parts of the global weather enterprise face uncertainty, the launch of MTG-S1 is a timely reminder of what’s possible when there’s sustained public investment in weather infrastructure.

And, like any weather satellite, you probably won’t hear about MTG-S1 ever again. But the next time you get your forecast, it might be thanks to this bird!

PS. MTG-S1 also carries the Sentinel-4 instrument, part of the Copernicus programme, providing hourly data on air quality and atmospheric composition.
