🌲 On Monday, at the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (#COP30), global leaders gathered to celebrate 15 years of the Bonn Challenge – the world’s largest restoration initiative.

🌼 The milestone was honoured at the high-level event, “The Bonn Challenge: 15 Years of Forest Landscape Restoration for Climate, Nature & People" co-hosted by IUCN and Germany."

🌳 To date, the Bonn Challenge has facilitated the pledge of over 210 million hectares, by more than 60 countries, subnational governments, and private partners. This movement has demonstrated unprecedented political will and collective ambition for forest and landscape restoration (FLR).

🌱 "Fifteen years ago, Germany launched the Bonn Challenge with IUCN as a call to restore the world’s degraded lands," said Dr. Jochen Flasbarth. "Today, we see the growing power of restoration to unite climate, biodiversity, and development goals."

Forests do more for the climate than sequester and store carbon - they regulate temperature and rainfall, supporting tropical agriculture.

🌍 From climate resilience to restoring #biodiversity, today’s biggest challenges need solutions that work for both people and the planet.

Produced for IUCN by @bbcstoryworks Commercial Productions, and narrated by the late Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the @JaneGoodallInst, the series shows how protecting #nature can cut emissions, strengthen communities, and improve lives.

Our wellbeing is rooted in forests – yet they’re disappearing fast.

As the climate summit #COP30 unfolds in the Amazon, one truth is clear: When we protect forests, we protect people.

Let’s keep them standing. https://t.co/VpT73F1IQM

During the winter, the #Bermuda - #Azores high is weakest and farthest east. As it retreats to the east during this season, #Caribbean weather becomes more influenced by frontal systems that originate in the mid-latitudes, which can occasionally sink into the Caribbean Basin. https://t.co/7GwSGptOxI

🌴Over the past month, we have been learning about primary forests, and the valuable role that these ecosystems play in mitigating climate change, maintaining biodiversity, supporting human and nonhuman populations, and contributing to the health of our planet and its people.

🪲With #COP30 coming to a close in the middle of the Amazon (one of the world’s largest intact primary forests), we are prompted to think about what the protection and conservation of primary forests looks like today, tomorrow, and forever onward.

🌲One thing is clear: we must take action to ensure these ecosystems survive. The Rio Conventions provide a powerful pathway for such action. Read this Crossroads Blog to learn more about how policymakers, decision-makers, donors, and other stakeholders can take action now to prevent these precious ecosystems from disappearing: https://t.co/1uYmTLi5B4
