🌎 In November, the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team had the honour of joining IUCN's delegation at the 30th convening of the Conference of Parties (#COP30) to the UNFCCC.

🌴With the conference taking place in Belém, Brazil—a gateway to the Amazon Rainforest— terrestrial ecosystems like forests and their intertwined relationship with global issues, such as climate change, were important topics at the forefront of many discussions. COP30 reminded us just how important protecting, conserving, and restoring these precious ecosystems are in the fight against climate change.

🌐 We are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with so many stakeholders and partners who are making a difference, from local communities to global conventions.

📚 Read the story below to learn about how the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team engaged at COP30, as well as reflections from our team members and partners who were on the ground in Belém: https://t.co/LzK2MYyeCT

🌱Last week, Paloma Pressato and Gustavo Pacheco from WRI Brasil and Anique Hillbrand from IUCN met up in Brazil’s Mata Atlântica to explore how the FLR Hub can connect with local partners to accelerate restoration implementation in this critical landscape.

Over the course of the visit, we:
🔹 Met with a dedicated local NGO, Associação Ambientalista Copaíba, that is leading community-driven restoration.
🔹 Saw nature-based solutions in action at active restoration sites.
🔹 Spoke with a cattle farmer who is restoring pastureland and slopes to increase water security.
🔹 Learned from a family of coffee farmers that is using agroforestry to improve soil health, productivity, and ecosystem resilience, while cultivating sustainable value chains.
🔹 Explored public-led watershed restoration efforts that are helping secure water resources and increase biodiversity.

🌳 These conversations and field insights strengthened our shared understanding of how restoration can thrive when local leadership, scientific expertise, and long-term partnerships come together. This visit also reaffirmed the Hub’s commitment to harnessing restoration approaches that are socially grounded, economically viable, and ecologically sound.

What’s next?  Later this month, IUCN, WWF Brasil, and WRI Brasil will come together to co-design the Hub’s path forward for the next 5 years. This will enable us to hit the ground running in January 2026, moving from vision to action on the ground.

👏 A huge thank you to our local partners and the communities who welcomed us and shared their experiences. We look forward to continuing this work together to scale restoration in the Mata Atlântica and beyond!
