Can you spy the #vonKármán vortex streets streaming off the Canary Islands, as seen from @NOAA's #GOESEast 🛰️ this morning?

These long chains of spiral eddies occur when the prevailing wind is forced to move around an island or isolated mountain. The wind changes direction, causing the air, and its subsequent clouds, to rotate into a spiral shape.

RT @esaclimate: 🚨NEW TENDER issued by the ESA Climate Office

RECCAP2: Global land carbon budget and its attribution to regional drivers (Activity Number: 1000039196) esastar-publication-ext.sso.… #ParisAgreement #GlobalStocktake #NDCs #GHG

The ESA Climate Office has issued a new tender to investigate the requirements and research and development activities needed for the optimal use of satellite-based Essential Climate Variables to make a significant step forward in the attribution and quantification of the global land carbon sources and sinks to land use change, fire and harvest disturbances and recovery, as well as climate effects.

The project shall improve our scientific knowledge in monitoring the impacts of climate change and direct human land use activity on the behaviour of natural sources and sinks of GHGs (CO2, CH4, N2O) on the land, on how carbon fluxes are controlled by water availability and temperature, through combined analysis of surface energy and CO2 fluxes.

The project shall also:
- support country reporting and the National Determined Contribution process of the UNFCCC Paris Agreement Global Stocktake, and
provide regular, timely and adequate updates for the UNFCCC Paris Agreement Global Stocktake by combining 'bottom up' regional greenhouse gas budgets - informed by EO-based Essential Climate Variables - with 'top down' inversions separating each approach the anthropogenic fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O and the natural flux in accordance with best available science.

Mind the gap!

An example of the discrepancy between what satellites see and what is reported by countries in regard to carbon sinks/sources⬇️
In a recent paper researchers use the example of Brazil where estimates using Earth observation data indicated that, between 2001 and 2020, the country as a whole was as a net carbon sink. This contrasts to the country’s inventory, which showed human activity, resulted in forests in Brazil being a net carbon source.
