It has been a pleasure representing Gumarran over the past few months. Gumarran is a First Nations man from the Yolgnu tribe. He has been incarcerated disproportionately in custody over the past 3 years for crimes he never intended. Yesterday, he entered a plea of guilty for the chance to be free again noting that this was the hardest thing for him to do. I am so pleased that he allowed me to represent him and now he is free. There is no doubt in my mind that indigenous men and women are treated harshly by the system. More harshly than whites. Today Gumarran is free but not without suffering the pain of indignity. Gumarran is a musician, a sought after artist and a painter unlike any I have seen before. The judge was fair within the confines of a system that does not give many the opportunity to truly receive or dish out justice. Against the weight of policing and prosecution, there is very little wriggle room.

So happy that now he is free!

The very beautiful aspect of the painting from Gumarran is that for many First Nations people they were not consulted. It is patronising claiming that all that the indigenous want or desire is recognition. Equally the indigenous do not recognise a Constitution that was written for a few white elites. Recognition is not the goal here. Many feel that their voices are muted and hence the drawing shows that the mouths are removed. I have seen of late some horrifying sentiments against the indigenous seeking to portray them as backwards, as ennoscriptd and worse still justifying why the stolen generation was a good idea. Clearly the Voice is fanning the flames of racism. While I agree that glorifying their culture is wrong or portraying them as being people of the land whereby they had no issues is also a distortion, but using that to justify racism is simply not on.

Everyone must be responsible for the outcomes and we need to be prepared not to exonerate one people at the expense of another.

We are formally launching our CoVision Food Co-operative. Our food security should be our primary focus. Along with getting off the bank grid and boycotting all the international corporations, our spiritual connection to each other will be enhanced if we all start eating the same ethically sourced food from freedom fighting farmers. Everyone is welcome to order, though we encourage you to join CoVision so you can contribute more than just food participation. We must learn to eat the whole of the animal, honour their sacrifice to us and back farmers that have their own abattoirs, support local abattoirs and grow their animals without forced vaccinations or medications. We are very lucky and so we must protect what we have. They are planning the destruction of our food supplies. We must all come together to protect what really matters.
