5 Common Mistakes Freelancers Need to Avoid

Thinking about freelancing or remote work? I remember my early days when I was excited to start. I made many mistakes, from setting unrealistic expectations to skipping contracts, and learned some tough lessons along the way. But each mistake taught me something valuable! If you’re just starting out, here are five common mistakes to avoid so you can focus on what really matters.

1. Overpromise and Underdeliver

It’s better to keep things realistic and deliver more than expected! When you go above and beyond, happy clients can leave great reviews, which could help you get even bigger projects later. Knowing what you can handle helps you focus on quality and avoid burn outs.

2. Not Discussing Contracts

Never skip this step! A contract is super important for both you and your client. It clearly outlines what needs to be done, when it’s due, and how you’ll get paid. Sometimes we get excited and accept a job without talking through all the details, but that can lead to confusion or even not getting paid. Always make sure there’s a clear contract in place!

3. Choosing the Wrong Niche for Money

A lot of people ask me, “Which field pays the most?” Of course, money matters, but if you’re working in an area you don’t enjoy, it can lead to burnout. Find something you love, and you’ll do your best work. Passion and interest make a big difference!

4. Having Unrealistic Expectations

Freelancing isn’t an overnight success story. There will be good days and tough ones, and that’s totally normal. When you’re starting out, focus on building your reputation and getting testimonials. Good reviews will help you land better projects in the future. Don’t worry if things aren’t perfect right away, it all adds up with time.

5. Focusing Only on Technical Skills

Being good at what you do is important, but don’t forget the soft skills! Good communication, teamwork, and time management are just as valuable. Strong communication has helped me build long-term relationships with clients. As a freelancer, you’re not just the “tech person” you’re also your own marketing expert, project manager,HR and customer service. Balancing these roles is all part of freelancing!

Anything you would like to add? Your insights could help someone else to avoid the same mistake!

On November 15, we are going to have an incredible conversation with Guillermo Rauch, the founder and CEO of Vercel; the platform most of us love and use! 😍

This's going to be a first for Ethiopia and our tech community, it's going to be fascinating and influential. I am excited for this and I hope you are too! 🎉

Originally from Lanús, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was involved in creating numerous influential open source projects and his first company Cloudup was acquired by Automattic. He later created NextJS, the most popular react framework and then Vercel the cloud infrastructure focused on DX. 🔥

Along many things he has also authored one of the first books on Node.js, authored Mongoose, SocketIO and Hyper and so much more. 🤓

This is a long conversation about his early childhood, family and friends, relationships and belief, tech and hobbies, thoughts on sensitive and philosophical topics and much more. We're all going to learn a-lot from him. 🥰

The session will be a video podcast and it will be recorded and uploaded. Can't wait and until then think of questions you'd like to ask him! 🥳

I took the AWS SAA-C03 (Amazon Web Services Solution Architect Associate) exam this week.

Here are some resources that helped me prepare:

Cloud Practitioner Essentials - If you’re new to cloud concepts, start here. It’s a free course on AWS Skill Builder that covers the basics well.

Standard Exam Prep Plan for the AWS Solutions Architect - Next, I moved on to this structured course on skill builder

Stephane Maarek’s Tutorials - The full course is on Udemy, but some videos are also available for free on YouTube. I really love his way of teaching.

Digital Cloud Training - This YouTube series includes AWS console-based labs, which are great for getting hands-on experience

Andrew Brown’s Exam Pro - Available on FreeCodeCamp’s YouTube, and a playlist on his channel. his labs are CLI-based (with bash noscripting)

Practice Exams:

->The Skill Builder courses include quizzes after each module.

->Whizlabs has 1 free and 22 paid practice exams. Once you sign up, you'll start receiving daily questions directly in your inbox.

->Exam Pro offers 1 free and 4 paid exams.
