TL; DR
Why can we use Facebook, Youtube without paying any kind of fees ?. I’m sure many of you have the answer.
Facebook owns a lot of data from more than 2.7 billion users, they can do many things with that amount of data.
The same with Youtube. Nowadays, data is money. But let’s take a further look, in my opinion, the ones that can transmit and process the data can make even more money.
OK, SO WHAT ABOUT IN CRYPTO?

1/ Data means value, Data means money.
2/ Who has more Data => Has more power.
Who can transmit and process the data => Also has the power.
3/ In Crypto, data of prices, amount of collateral assets and other figures.. are essential for Dapps.
4/ That demand grows even more in DeFi when we need real-time and trustable data.
(1)+(2)+(3) => Demand for data proving services + (4) => The existence of data (oracle) providers.=> DeFi Oracle is a must in our development.
WHAT IS ORACLE?
Let me explain a little bit before we continue:
“Oracle is a system that provides real-time data for blockchains and smart contracts.
Because of Oracle, blockchains and smart contracts (on-chain) can interoperate with data from the real world (off-chain).”
Some practical usages of Oracle that you should know.
- Synthetic (SNX) needs someone to provide the price of assets like gold, indexes, BTC price, ETH price,.. to know how many synthetic assets tokens they should make.
- Aave, Lend, BZRX need data of the amount of collateral assets to calculate interest rate, liquidated price,..
- Ampleforth needs to know the amount of collateral assets to release a suitable amount of stablecoin.
- Centralized wallets like: Meta Mask, Coinbase, Coin98 Wallet,.. want to show the balance of coins inside the wallet, need someone to provide the price of coins.
ACTUALLY, ORACLE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR A LONG TIME.
Chainlink (link) is a project that had soon realized this and developed their solution since 2017. It’s difficult to find a name in this field which can compete with Link until Band showed up last year.
Recently in the Yield Farming trend (a part of DeFi), you might notice that almost every Oracle coin has skyrocketed. Why?
Like I said before, Oracle is closely related to DefFi applications, DeFi grew => Oracle token pump.
But there are a lot more in DeFi than Yield Farming, Yield Farming goes down, we can still see a lot of DeFi Dapps are growing (Lending, Borrowing, Insurance, Derivatives,..)
And the fact that TVL in DeFi still grows everyday ($11.2B in the time of writing). From that, you can guess the potential of many applications related to DeFi, including Oracle.
