Deputy shot during deadly ambush in 2021 released from hospital more than 8 months later

Deputy Darryl Garrett was one of three deputies ambushed on Oct. 16, 2021. Deputy Kareem Atkins was killed in the shooting at a bar in the 4400 block of the North Freeway near Crosstimbers. Atkins, along with deputies Garrett and Jaquim Barthem, was working an extra security job at the time.

On Sunday, more than eight months after the ambush, Garrett was released from the hospital. Constable Mark Herman said he'll continue his recovery "in the comfort of his home, surrounded by family and loved ones."

One suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting. Eddie Miller, 19, was charged with capital murder in December for the death of Atkins, attempted capital murder and aggravated assault in regards to the shooting of Garrett and Barthen.

A historic Catholic Church in West Virginia burned to the ground this weekend, and police are now investigating the incident as arson.

St. Colman Catholic Church was already a smoldering ruin when firefighters from the Beaver Volunteer Fire Department arrived to the scene Sunday morning. The church was built in 1878 and was declared an official historical site in 1984. Authorities have not released information about potential suspects.

A U.S. Coast Guard crew rescued seven boaters after lightning struck and disabled their vessel off the coast of Florida on Saturday, officials said.

The seven boaters were taking part in a fishing tournament when their 39-foot personal vessel got caught in a storm about 100 miles off the shore of Clearwater, the Coast Guard said. One member of the group was recording video of the storm with his cellphone when lightning struck the boat.

Tulare County jail records show that Zendejas and Madrigal are no longer in custody as of this morning. I reached to the DEA's LA office to ask if they are involved or if the Feds potentially picked the men up. A DEA spokeswoman told me she doesn't believe so.
