The barges, built near Guangzhou, are equipped with retractable piles that are anchored to the seabed to provide stability.

Each barge has bridges for communication with other barges and with the shore, which makes it possible to equip a “bridge” almost a kilometer long.

These barges could help China overcome one of the biggest logistical challenges in invading Taiwan: the lack of sufficient warships and suitable landing points.

Taiwan's west coast is well defended. Barges provide flexibility to land elsewhere, including in less fortified areas.
