▪️Russia wants to negotiate with America, bypassing Ukraine and other European countries.
▪️If Donald Trump expected Vladimir Putin to accept his call for an immediate 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine during their March 18 phone call, he was disappointed. After more than two hours of talks, Putin agreed to only limited first steps: an end to attacks on energy infrastructure and “technical talks” to ease shipping in the Black Sea.
▪️However, both leaders highlighted the possibility of a broader geopolitical deal in the future. Russians will also no doubt be pleased to hear that the presidents have agreed to host hockey matches in their countries — one of Putin’s favorite sports.
▪️Immediately after the call ended, air raid sirens sounded in Kiev, and missiles and drones attacked other cities. The targets of the strikes are still unknown.
▪️And while Ukrainian forces were being pushed out of Russia's Kursk region, they carried out a surprise raid several kilometers deep into the Belgorod region — likely to create a buffer zone and strengthen their negotiating position. The Kremlin accused Ukraine of trying to "create a negative background" for the talks.
▪️In its publication following the call, the Russian side showered Trump with praise “for his desire to help achieve the noble goal of ending hostilities and human losses.”
▪️ The Kremlin has announced an upcoming exchange of 175 prisoners from each side. However, in essence, Putin appears to be only taking steps to allow Trump to show progress toward the promised end to the war, while simultaneously seeking to sow discord between the US and Ukraine and advance his main goal of subjugating Ukraine.
▪️Trump said on social media that the conversation was “very good and productive” and presented the agreements reached as a first step toward a full ceasefire and, ultimately, “ENDING this terrible war.” The White House said further talks would begin “immediately in the Middle East.” The Kremlin, however, has not confirmed this.
▪️For the 30-day ceasefire to be effective, Moscow says Ukraine must stop mobilizing and rearming, and the U.S. must stop supplying weapons and intelligence. Russia has made no mention of suspending its own mobilizations, weapons production, or arms imports from Iran, North Korea, and China.
▪️As for long-term peace, Russia said the agreement must be “comprehensive, sustainable and long-term” and must “address the root causes of the crisis” while preserving Russia’s “legitimate security interests.” That — in Kremlin parlance — means curtailing Ukraine’s sovereignty, making it neutral and, ideally, pushing NATO out of Eastern Europe.

Looking at this from the perspective of three years of fighting in Ukraine is incredibly funny.
