On May 7, 2025, New York City police arrested approximately 40 to 50 students at Columbia University after they occupied the second-floor reading room of Butler Library during a pro-Palestinian demonstration. The protest featured banners reading “Strike for Gaza” and “Liberated Zone.” The university administration called in the NYPD following clashes between demonstrators and campus security, resulting in two public safety officers being injured.
This incident is part of a broader wave of student activism demanding that Columbia divest its $14.8 billion endowment from defense companies and Israeli military contractors. The protests have drawn criticism from former President Donald Trump, who has labeled them antisemitic and advocated for the deportation of foreign student activists like Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian Columbia graduate student currently detained in Louisiana.
In a related development, a federal judge in Newark, New Jersey, has ordered the Trump administration to provide detailed legal justification for its attempt to deport Khalil. The judge has temporarily blocked Khalil’s deportation as constitutional questions are reviewed.
Similar pro-Palestinian protests have occurred at other institutions, including the University of Washington, where student demonstrators were arrested and suspended.

President Donald Trump signaled a potential shift in U.S. trade policy, indicating that his administration may relax restrictions on the export of advanced microchips to select Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. This move comes ahead of his scheduled diplomatic tour of the Middle East and reflects a broader effort to solidify alliances and expand technological cooperation in the region.

The current restrictions, originally imposed to prevent sensitive technology from reaching China, have drawn criticism from major tech firms such as Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon. These companies argue that the rules hinder their global competitiveness and could unintentionally push strategic partners in the Gulf toward Chinese alternatives.
In a significant development, the UAE has committed to investing $1.4 trillion in the U.S. over the next decade, aiming to secure preferential access to American semiconductor and AI technologies. This pledge underscores the Gulf state’s ambition to become a regional tech hub and deepen its economic ties with Washington.
Trump also hinted at reviewing geopolitical naming conventions, possibly supporting Arab states’ preference for the term “Arabian Gulf” over “Persian Gulf”—a move that could heighten tensions with Iran.

According to reports from Reuters and The Guardian, the deal is anticipated to include provisions for reducing tariffs on British exports, such as steel and automobiles, in exchange for the UK lowering its Digital Services Tax (DST) on U.S. tech companies. The British government has been under pressure to address the DST, which imposes a 2% levy on large digital companies, generating approximately £800 million annually.
This trade agreement would be the first significant deal since President Trump imposed widespread tariffs on U.S. trading partners in April, including a 10% baseline tariff on most countries and a 25% import fee on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. Britain was affected by these tariffs but did not face the steeper reciprocal rates.
The announcement comes amid ongoing global trade tensions, including a planned U.S.-China meeting in Switzerland aimed at resolving the trade war. Trump’s tariff policies have disrupted global markets, prompting concerns over supply chains and economic growth.
