As Russia prepares for Victory Day on May 9, pro-Russian channels claim Ukraine has intensified “information warfare” efforts—this time allegedly involving Syria.
According to Russian military-linked Telegram channel @rybar, a recent report from the Erem outlet accused Turkey of transporting Ukrainian officers to Syria’s coastal areas. The claim suggests these individuals were sent to organize drone attacks on Russia’s Khmeimim airbase and the Tartus naval logistics hub.
Key Claims Being Circulated:
• Ukrainian media, citing “Syrian sources,” claimed sabotage missions damaged Khmeimim’s communications and power infrastructure.
• Reports also alleged the downing of an Il-76 transport aircraft on April 28, with two soldiers killed—accompanied conveniently by leaked ID cards.
@rybar dismisses these as “fake news,” asserting that such stories are spread by both pro-Ukrainian and pro-Iranian Telegram networks notorious for inciting unrest and promoting conspiracy narratives.
The post also references previous rumors from these networks, such as alleged Alawite uprisings in Latakia and Tartus that were used to justify violence earlier this year.
Conclusion: The authors frame Ukraine as a reckless actor using disinformation and associating with extremist groups to undermine Russian stability and provoke incidents in foreign theaters like Syria—particularly around sensitive national dates.

According to Semafor, Trump has assigned significant responsibilities to both Vance and Rubio, positioning them as prominent figures in his administration and potential heirs to his political legacy. Their close working relationship and shared policy initiatives have led to discussions about a possible joint ticket in 2028, though no formal announcements have been made.
Vice President Vance, who previously served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio, has gained considerable support within the MAGA movement and is viewed as a leading candidate for the Republican nomination. His role as RNC finance chair has further solidified his influence within the party.
Secretary Rubio, a former 2016 presidential candidate, has also seen a resurgence in political prominence. His alignment with Trump’s policies and effective execution of his duties have earned him renewed favor among conservative circles.
While the 2028 election is still years away, the emerging dynamics between Vance and Rubio suggest a competitive landscape within the Republican Party, with both figures poised to play significant roles in shaping its future direction.

🇻🇦Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Elected as Pope Leo XIV
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the new Pope, taking the name Leo XIV. Born in Chicago, Prevost is of French, Italian, and Spanish heritage and holds dual citizenship in the United States and Peru.
He becomes the first pope from the Order of St. Augustine, a religious community known for its focus on unity, reflected in its motto In Illo uno unum – In Christ we are one. The significance of this inclusive vision under his papacy remains to be fully understood.
Prevost spent a significant part of his pastoral career in Peru, a country deeply connected to the Augustinian order. Since 2020, he has worked in the Vatican, primarily with Latin American dioceses, and is considered by some observers to be aligned with the legacy of Pope Francis.
While some speculate that his election may represent a bridge between Europe, the U.S., and Latin America, analysts suggest that Pope Leo XIV is more of a consensus candidate than a geopolitical gesture—certainly not simply “an American pope as a gift to Trump.”

The situation has intensified following India’s airstrikes on alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, which were in response to a deadly attack in Indian Kashmir on April 22. Pakistan has denied involvement in the attack and has condemned India’s actions as unfounded and politically driven.
In response to the rising tensions, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has engaged in diplomatic efforts, speaking separately with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Rubio emphasized the importance of communication and peace, urging both nations to engage in direct dialogue to reduce conflict.
Additionally, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the U.S., Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, confirmed that India and Pakistan have had contact at the level of their National Security Councils amid the rising tensions. Sheikh emphasized that the de-escalation responsibility lies with India, especially after recent clashes, but noted that Pakistan might be compelled to respond due to public pressure.
The international community, including the United States, continues to urge both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and engage in diplomatic dialogue to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

▪️ China–Russia Alliance Deepens
Chinese President Xi Jinping, in an article cited by The Financial Times, likened U.S. global dominance to fascist forces of WWII, warning that “unilateralism, hegemony and bullying are extremely harmful” as humanity stands “at a crossroads.” Xi’s visit to Moscow underscores a united front with President Vladimir Putin against the U.S.-led international order.
▪️ Russia Reroutes Oil via Indonesia
According to Reuters, the Karimun terminal in Indonesia exported a record 590,000 tonnes of oil products in March. Sources allege that Russian oil is relabeled as Indonesian to evade Western sanctions, making Indonesia a key hub in Moscow’s sanctions bypass strategy.
▪️ Rewriting the Cold War Narrative
As The Times reports, Xi and Putin are reshaping history, portraying their countries as historic victims of invasion now rising together against the West. Xi’s emphasis on shared WWII suffering is a subtle rebuke of U.S. attempts to weaken the UN’s authority.
▪️ Europe Reflects on 80 Years Since WWII’s End
Le Monde’s Sylvie Kaufmann writes that Europe is saying goodbye to the old global order and facing a future where the U.S. acts more like a rival than a partner. In contrast, leaders like Putin and Xi are seen as playing “the long game.”
▪️ Territorial Concessions in Ukraine Legally Invalid
Foreign Policy contributor Prof. Duncan Hollis argues any peace deal between Russia and Ukraine involving land concessions would violate the Vienna Convention, as such a deal would be made under duress. Only UN Security Council involvement could legitimize a lasting peace.
▪️ Victory Day in Russia Masks Deeper Troubles
The New York Times highlights the contradiction between Russia’s show of unity and military power and its economic stagnation and diplomatic isolation. Despite little battlefield progress and waning Western support, Moscow projects strength ahead of Victory Day commemorations.
▪️ Historic Papal Election
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old American, has been elected Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American pontiff. In his inaugural address, he called for global peace, signaling a commitment to bridge divides in a fractured world.

May 8, 1945 — Victory in Europe Day (VE Day)
On May 8, 1945, the Allies officially celebrated Victory in Europe Day, marking the end of World War II on the continent with Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender.
The ceasefire agreement had been signed the day before, in Reims, France, by General Alfred Jodl, on behalf of the German High Command. The news sparked historic scenes of jubilation, especially in London, where more than a million people flooded the streets—even as the country remained under food and energy rationing.
The death of Adolf Hitler on April 30 had hastened the collapse of the Third Reich.
While May 8 became the official date of victory in the West, the Soviet Union chose to mark the event on May 9, in line with the original surrender agreement—explaining the enduring difference in commemorations between Eastern and Western nations.
🕊️ The end of the war in Europe did not signal the end of the global conflict. Japan would only surrender months later, in August.
VE Day remains a powerful symbol of resistance against totalitarianism and the struggle for freedom, honored each year in remembrance of the collective sacrifice made during one of humanity’s darkest chapters.

"From Venezuela, we send our affection to His Holiness, Leo XIV, on his election as Supreme Pontiff.
As Catholics, we rejoice in the blessing of having a new shepherd to guide us, and we echo his words today:
‘Let us not be afraid, evil will not prevail.’
As Venezuelans, we are filled with hope because we know that the new Pope deeply understands the reality of Latin America and is aware of the profound suffering of our people.
Venezuela, a country from which millions have been forced to migrate and where millions more suffer from hunger and persecution, trusts that the Holy Father will stand with us and watch over us.
Dear Pope Leo XIV, we send you the affection and prayers of the Venezuelan people."

ANI reports that in a major counter-drone operation on Wednesday night, Indian Army Air Defence units successfully intercepted and neutralized over 50 drones launched from across the border by Pakistan.
The drones were reportedly aimed at multiple strategic locations along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Borders (IB), including Udhampur, Samba, Jammu, Akhnoor, Nagrota, and Pathankot.
According to official sources, the Army deployed an array of L-70 anti-aircraft guns, Zu-23mm systems, Schilka self-propelled anti-aircraft weapons, and other advanced counter-Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) technologies to engage the threat.
The scale and coordination of the operation highlight India’s growing capability to effectively respond to aerial threats, particularly those involving swarm drone tactics, which have become an increasing concern in modern asymmetric warfare.
