With a kippah and tears in his eyes, Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke at the reopening of the Munich synagogue, expressing deep concern over the resurgence of antisemitism in Germany. He said he hopes “one day Jewish life in Germany can function again without police protection” and declared: “I declare war on every form of antisemitism. Antisemitism must not be shielded as freedom of art, culture, or any other field.”

Merz admitted feeling ashamed “both as Chancellor and as a German,” and recalled that an entire generation of Jews in Germany has known public Jewish life only under strict security measures. He warned that the October 7, 2023 massacre exposed how some newcomers were socialized in environments where antisemitism is near state doctrine, and that since then Germany has faced a renewed wave of antisemitism—open and covert—across social media, universities, and public life.

Speaking on behalf of the federal government, Merz vowed to do everything possible so that Jews across Germany can “live, celebrate, and learn without fear,” and urged all citizens to uphold the promise of “never again” as a collective historical duty.
